Does anyone know of a source for determining how old your Remington is by the serial number? I know they're out there for Garands, and others. Ruger has a setup on their site but I didn't see one on Remington Country.
I just bought a 700BDL used and was curious how old it was. The serial is different from the newer ones which all start with a letter. This serial starts with 62XXXXX. It's in excellent shape and shoots great, I was just wondering when it was made.

Unlike most other manufacturers, Remington doesn't use the serial number sequence to determine the firearm's birthdate. You'll find a 2 or 3 letter combination near the serial number, then go to the Bluebook here: http://www.bluebookinc.com/staticinfo/bluebookinc/pdf/gunbook/serialize.pdf to determine the date.

The first letter is the month and is determined by the mnemonic - BLACKPOWDERX. Where Jan is B, Feb is L ... Dec is X.

The remaining letter(s) is/are the year from the chart. The proceeding years continue alphabetically where the list cuts off with the exception of 2001 which is W, there is no V (it would look too much like a U). Note that there are several repeats of the same sequence, but the age and model of the firearm should make the date range obvious.

Thanks, Mal. I didn't know about that setup. According to the condition and that information my rifle was made in February of 98. I've saved that file and location, it will come in handy some time again.

Thanks for the quick response.

If you e mail Remington with the make model and serial number they will give you a prompt reply with the year of manufacture of the gun and will usually give you the retail price at the time it was manufactured too.
