Mother of pearl???

I've never seen any "pearl" looking like it came from some "spiny" MOP.

That's the special "ostrich quill" mother of pearl.

Actually, no idea what it is. Some form of synthetic perhaps?
 
Having spent some time examining the knife I'm certain that the mother of pearl is carved in this shape. The "bumps" are too evenly and symmetrically spaced to be natural.
