Went to the local gun show today. Arrived at 11:30. Usually when the doors open at 9:00 there is a line about 50 yards long and by 10 you can walk right in. Well, at 11:30 the line was 100 yards long. No idea what it was like at 9 am.

Didn't even get out of the truck. Went home to wait for the crowd to clear out some. Went back at 1:45 and the line was STILL 80 yards long. Must have been wall to wall to people inside the hall. Might try again tomorrow.

What's up? Panic buying returned? Everyone spending their Christmas cash?

Not panic buying, but still buying. I think people who were waiting for prices to come down are now getting stuff they wanted.

I went to a gun show here in eastern NC about a month ago, and I have never seen a gun show here that was that crowded.

I don't get it, though. They are never great prices, and there are just as many people selling DVDs and posters of Elvis as there are people selling guns. What's with the staggering drawing power?
I have NEVER gotten a deal at a gunshow that I couldn't have done better right here at THR or somewhere similar.

Just slightly above normal pre-Obama crowds at todays GRB High Caliber gun show, but by 11:30 it was way too crowded to enjoy.

Was good to see ammo prices coming down a bit, got 1000 rounds of Wolf 55gr FMJ .223 for $230 out the door, Brown Bear 7.62x39 was $200 + tax per 1000, but too far to walk back to the car to get more than one case at this show, I needed .223 more.

Plenty of $100-110 stripped lowers.

I've never done worse than at least $50 less than I can find on-line at our gun shows. If I do I order and have it shipped for pick-up at the next show at one of the dealers I have a good relationship with.

Got a Century C93 HK93 clone for $ 650 + $20 shipping + $20 transfer fee. He was so impressed at my price he called to get some to sell but they were out by time mine had shipped to him. The pair he got through his normal distributor he sold for $799 each latter that morning. He was also transferring one of the new ATI MP5 clone pistols from an on-line purchase, it looked quite well made.

You have to do your home work before going to gun shows as for every good deal there are usually two or three bad ones.

I went to The Original Fort Worth Gun Show today. Got there at about 9:10 a.m. Had to park a long ways off, and there was a line about 100 yards long. By 10:30 a.m. the entire building was packed with people. Never seen anything like it.

Had to laugh when my wife came to pick me up after the show this afternoon and said "there sure are a lot of anti-Obama bumper stickers around here today" :)

Well there is a lot of scare stories still floating around. There is the IRS gun tax myth making the rounds. I've had two people ask me about that one over the last month. There is the UN Small Arms Treaty that some fear and hey....we still have Obama, Pelosi and Reid in charge. If the 3 Stooges don't make you nervous then you've got nerves of steel.
We have a gunshow coming up this weekend. Hopefully it won't be too crowded. I wonder how many people returned a ton of useless crap after Christmas so they can buy goodies at the gunshows.

Show in Columbus Ohio (home of the Rose Bowl Champion Ohio State Buckeyes, and The Best Damned Band In The Land) was way more crowded and hot than I would have preferred. Got in for free and a free hat to boot (instead of $6) by re-upping my NRA membership, bought my lovely princess some nasal napalm hot pepper spray, and that was about it. True bargains have been scarce for a long time, unless you like beat up old revolvers, ShamWows, cheap black nylon holsters and way overpriced ammo.

And really cheap knives from who knows where.....

With only a few exceptions where availability has improved significantly (SIG 556 variations, DPMS .308, RRA .308, Colt LE6940 & 6920) and some discontinued models (MSAR) prices are still 5-10% higher than they were back in early October '08 when Obama was slipping a bit in the polls, so we are still not back to pre-election sanity, especially with for ammo.

Well said!

just voting with their wallets, I'll bet some are even taking advantage of the dreaded Gunshow loophole:) I wish I had some Christmas cash :(

It is probably a combination of xmas money and just post holiday itchiness to get away and shut off for the day and do something entirely selfish. The economy is not as bad as the media says. Retail always rebounds for the holidays and continues for the winter.

and some discontinued models (MSAR)

Since when are the MSAR AUGs "discontinued"? They're still making the STG556 (AUG mag) and E4 (AR-15 mag) versions, and apparently selling them as fast as they can make them.

Prices have come down substantially since this time last year ($1800ish then, $1100ish now), but some of that may be economy of scale and ammortisation of machinery/tooling costs.

I've heard a few random "hey this guy at the gunstore said..." rumours on AR15.com, but none of them have yet been proven to be founded, and folks on ARF are buying brand-new MSARs every week, and often waiting for new stock to come in.

I went to the WAC show today. I spent 20 bucks for a cheap Gerber skinning knife. My wife spent about a 100 on quilt gifts a lady was selling.

Hordes of guys trying to get away from their wives and kids.
"...a 100 on a quilt..." Quilts at a gun show. Geezuz!
"...The economy is not as bad as the media says..." Yes it is. Doesn't stop a guy from looking.

Gun Shows are the Barometer for Gun Legislation.

We have idiots who want an un-armed populace.......and people know it.

Folks don't have any extra dough, but are scraping it together to buy guns and ammo.

Makes one wonder........

Pyzon.... I was at the Columbus show also (AKA "Home of the Buckeyes" :D)

My take was somewhat different. There were some good deals on a few surplus WW2 and AK stuff. The place was very busy which I think is a good thing. Cant disagree about the sham-wow crap. I did hear them talking about how poorly they were doing & about trying to find posters or something gun related.

Bulk ammo seemed reasonable, not as cheap as on-line but not that far off.

lots of decent deals on accessories & magazines.

Overall....Not bad, Not great....but worth the trip. IMO

^ As far as the political side. I would agree with what is being said above.

The vendor I bought from was VERY busy. I'm glad to see it, didnt mind waiting. I hope nothing comes of our worst fears, but I'm glad to see my fellow citizens voting with their wallets. (Now, Lets translate that to the ballet box!;))

They were all searching for ammo at the last gun show I attended....and there was none to be found.

I have actually stopped buying guns because it is hard to find the ammo to shoot them. Instead I spend time I would normally spend putting some WWB down range reloading. It is not that I don't like reloading, I have been reloading rifle for years, but it takes a long time to knock out 100 rounds of 45 ACP on a Rock Chucker.

I have not attended a Columbus Ohio gun show and have wondered what they are like. Are they/have they always been like you posted? If so, I am glad I didn't waste the time. What about the shows in Wilmington & Dayton, same way?

I hadn't been to a gun show in a while. The crowds were bad. Many of the vendors were rude and dishonest. I stood by biting my tongue as a seller "quoted" legislation that he said had already been passed that would ban all shotguns and rifles holding more than three rounds. "So you better buy this shotgun (a "tacted-out" Mossberg 500) for only $700." That was the most overt fear mongering I witnessed, but the feeling was everywhere.

That was over a year ago. I went back to a show run by the same folks a couple of weeks ago and it was completely different. Still crowded and somewhat overpriced, but the atmosphere of desperation and exploitation was gone.

I was there with a friend who's looking to buy his first handgun. I reluctantly suggested the show because he could put his hands around so many different models to see what felt best. He didn't leave with a gun that day, but he will get one.
