New 2023 br chart...

Nice to see some new powders. I used to enjoy looking through different Burn Charts trying to learn something. Now, they're just fun to look at. ;)

I look at burn rates when selecting powders for my M1A. If I hot rod it too much I may bend an operating rod. Operating rods are expensive.

Burn Rate charts only tell you burn speed at the start of ignition.
They tell you nothing about the change in speed with pressure rise.
They tell you nothing about where that speed change stops with pressure rise.
They tell you nothing about much energy/unit mass is produced for the different powders.

They're colorful.... that's pretty much it as far as it goes.
Take care.

.

So the difference between the powder with the slowest rate and fastest burn rate is meaningless? Is that what we are saying here?

Hodgdon's order is not consistent with some manufacturers' order.

Alliant lists BE-86 as between Unique and Power Pistol, but Hodgdon has BE-86 (#39) listed as slower than Power Pistol (#34).

Also, Hodgdon has updated the list as per May '23, though I don't know where it is on their website.

They own the market, if they could get it right that would be gooder

Maybe I am missing something but that's not what I am expecting from a burn rate chart. Only the slowest to fastest. No more.

Excellent.

I wish that were the universal view taken by many of those who've otherwise/repeatedly asked the question:
". . .can I substitute X for Y... ? They're right next to each other on the chart.... "

Therein lies the problem.
Without actual manuals which ("usually") list fastest to slowest as loads are listed going down the page.. . .
Or the likes of QuickLoad (which can list multiple powders/loads/volumes/pressures/burn efficiencies for a given cartridge/bullet/speed....
. . . one is flying blind

QuickLoad is really nifty that way: Tell it what velocity, pressure, fill %, (etc) you want
QL_Propellant_Table_In2.gif

and it will tell you every combination of powders/load-weights/results can be had w/ every component in its library

Understood. I respect the information shared here in respect to caution. It's one of the many reasons I consider THR reloading information the best of all the gun forums.
