My friend just bought a Smith & Wesson 22a with a 5.5 inch bull barrel. I was wondering if this is a good pistol and if not why? Do any of ya'll own one? Do you have any experience with one? Do you have any maintence tips? Thank you for any and all information.

I don't know. He's in Houston and I'm in East Texas. I havent seen it yet but when I do I'll post the model number.

Sure, it's a good pistol, and in my experience, only the first of many rimfire pistols; don't know how many I have, without going to the gun room & counting.

Texasboy, I thought Houston was East texas; sure seems like it from here, and even moreso when driving it.

Keep it clean and it is a great pistol. I put a red dot scope on mine and now it is the favorite of the gals when we go to the range. They find it easy to shoot and more accurate then they can possibly shoot, makes for a great time for them. I use it for small game hunting on occasion.

I thought Houston was East texas . . .

Sure is a lot closer to it than El Paso, but trust me, Houston is not East Texas. I think you need to drive at least about 100 miles north up Hwy 59 before they'd let you call it East Texas.

22A

Have owned and shot one for 6 years. Accurate, reliable, love where the magazine release is located (front strap), easy takedown. Never a problem with it.
Seems to me people either love it or hate it. Try it and make your own decision.

22A IS the model number. Like someone said, keep it clean and it will work great. I would try different ammo to see what it shoots best with, but I do that with all my guns.

I thought 22A was the model number. Thanks for all the info guys. au2183 i do the same thing with my guns. noskilz I agree with you.

Google "s&w 22a review" and you will find plenty of information. :)

I have had one for 15 years now. It is the 7 inch barrel though. It is the gun I taught my wife how to shoot with. Mine carries a red dot and has been a favorite of hers from the begining. It has since gone on to teach others how to shoot.
It is accurate and reliable. Mine runs best on high velociity ammo although it will work with standard ammo after a good cleanig.
