The key to a fast AK reload. Either use the Redstar piece shown above where you can drop it with your finger, or if you are like me and use the magazine as the vertical foregrip, your hand is already in position.
For chamber empty reloads.
1. Hit release, tilt muzzle downwards to facilitate dropping the mag.
2. Grab spare mag with support hand. Keep firing hand on grip.
3. Rock & lock magazine in.
4. Instead of reaching over the top of the gun, rotate your firing hand so that the charging handle is now pointing in an upwards direction. Slam back charging handle with support hand. For me it is kind of just a sweeping motion, as my support hand leaves the inserted mag, hits the charging handle, and then sweeps back down to the mag. (vertical foregrip remember).
5. Twist gun back into firing position. Shoot more targets.
With practice this can be done very quickly. Not as fast as an AR, but with in .7-.9 of a second for all but the most coordinated AR users. When you get that upper crust of AR shooters, you are looking at a 1 - 1.5 reload and that is super fast. But the vast majority of practiced shooters are going to hover at around 3 seconds for an AR and 4-5 for an AK.
Sorry for the drift. That is a truely goregous weapon. I got to play with one at Robarm. The Galil style safety works great. The only thing I don't really care for, and that is totally personal opinion is the positioning of the front sight assembly. Krebs likes it on the end of the gas block, which I will admit looks much nicer, but I like mine on the end of the muzzle. Just a matter of personal taste is all. The Krebs A2 sights are superb and work very well. I love mine.
