New 223 Rem Ruger American predator issue.

I purchased a new Ruger American Predator 223 in Remington a few months ago. It's been sitting put away since I bought it because I haven't had the time to set it up. Sunday afternoon I decided to hand load a dummy round so I could start preparing for a load work up this week.

I started with a 69gr RMR BTHP loaded to mag length. It would not feed from the magazine. I seated it a little deeper and tried to chamber the round from the magazine again. I repeated this step several more times until it decided it would feed. After it would feed I still couldn't get the bolt to close.

Seated deeper and could eventually get the bolt to close but not easily like it should. I also tried the same thing with a Hornady 40gr Vmax bullet. By the time I could close the bolt the bullet was about ready to fall into the case.

I will have time to look back into this tonight but it's kind of driving me crazy. I'm wondering if the head space is wrong or something else I'm not seeing. Any suggestions before I ship it back to ruger would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to do that if I don't have to.

Just thought I would include a small update. I pulled the rifle out of its stock and broke the bolt down. I played with the Resizing die adjustment until a case would fit while closing the bolt like it should. My sizing die is now cranked down until it contacts the shell holder to achieve this.

I also played with mag well a little bit as magazine feels a lot more sloppy than I feel it should. I cranked the mag release mechanism down one more turn. No improvement. Also tried another 10 round magazine made by MFT. I have decent luck with them in my ARs. No change.

I feel that this is just the tightest chambered 223 rem out of all of the ones I own. It will just need to have its own special loads that I will have to separate from the rest of my rifles. I can't say I'm super happy about it but if it's in spec it's in spec. I guess I will have to continue on and see how it goes from here and make a decision if it's going or staying.

I had a combo in 223/12ga. Was the same way. Just a very short throat. Factory ammo would lock it up.

It would not be difficult to just ream it a bit.

True but it will cost to fix something that Ruger didn't do. I would contact Ruger and discuss my problem first.
