Another BIG FAN of the Dan Wessons here.

Best value of the market.

Pick one, you can't go wrong!

For everyday carry and quality, the Kimber Ultra Carry is hard to beat. It is very dependable and is fun to shoot, also a very good looking 1911.....

I bought a 3/4-sized gun and then started shooting IPSC. It didn't take long before I discovered 2 things: 1) all the good competition holsters and accessories are for full-size guns, and 2) lack of a full size gun was holding me back due to sight issues.

So here's an option.... buy a less-expensive full size gun to compete with, and use your very nice 3/4-size or compact to carry. As long as they feature the same controls you'll be OK swapping back and forth. And you won't be wanting to add clunky front & rear competition sights to your carry gun!

Consider that what makes this possible is that you can buy a Rock Island Armory 1911 in 38 Super or 45ACP in the sub-$420 range. My son actually picked up a new 38 Super for $380 recently. These are solid performers and all Colt parts will fit. I also understand that STI uses RIA guns as the basis for 1 or more of their "race guns".

I just think it would be a shame to burn up a nice Commander if you should get the "practical pistol bug".

Just mt 2 cents.

My Kimber is the best handgun I have ever owned. Remember that when you sell many more units than your competitors, you will see a higher number of problems in your guns. This does not mean a higher RATE of failure than any other gun. I use mine for everything and I would carry it to war tomorrow if I were allowed to.

I agree entirely. Both my Colt Defender and Kimber Tactical Custom II have been flawless over the years.

Go for the XD45!
I second that. I have a tactical and even with the factory sights it out shoots me. If you bought some adjustable target sights you could drive finishing nails. As far as reliablity I haven't had any FTF's but don't have a very hight volume through it, however I haven't heard anything bad about it, and some of the tourture test's I've watched were pretty impressive.

Well if you are going to lug it around on your hip, you just can't beat the Glock Slim Frame Model 36. It wont rust, bust, collect dust, implode or explode I'm told. It ain't got all them fancy gadgets to fool with either when you shoot it or clean it. You also don't need a quart of oil to keep it running either.....:D

I love my Kimber Deser Warrior, had a Team Match II that was awesome too. 1911's are fun but if you want something for carry later I'd go with something with more capacity, I have a FNP 45 that I love, can't beat 15 +1 capacity, it is kinda big and heavy but fun to shoot and accurate as well. I am a big .45 fan, I'd suggest at least looking at the XDs or FNs. I have short fingers and the polymer guns seem to fit a little bit better for me, I have to shift my grip to drop the slide on my 1911's, not in the FNP though.
Enjoy looking, the anticipation of buying something is almost as fun as owning something. The FNP is reasonably priced as well, my next gun might be a dark earth XD in .45 with a stainless slide even though lots of people tell me its sinfully ugly, to each his own I guess:)

I'm a big fan of the S&W 4506-1......yeah, they're no longer made, but you can find some in like new shape for around $600.

you don't have to look that far...or pay that much!

I love the 4506! Super accurate and absolutely dependable. My understanding is that they ARE still made for LEO contract.

That being said, I found for everyday carry that the XD 45 Compact is about perfect. Use the compact magazine for deep concealment and slap in a full size magazine with grip extension and you've got a Service model. 2 guns in one.

I just went through this very exercise. I was thinking of getting a bigger caliber than the 380/9's I have. I couldn't decide between 40 and 45. Then I had a chance to shoot a buddy's Colt Commander and, man, did I ever get 1911itis realllll bad. I found a NIB RIA Compact Tactical for $450, almost but didn't get it. I found a used Kimber Pro Carry sort of local, almost got that but didn't. I think I fondled dang near every 45 in town, several times. Then I started thinking that whatever I got I'd want to CC. The G30 really felt like holding the business end of a bat. The M&P seemed like the grip would get in the way. The XD 4" seemed real thick and long. So, I decided on the G36. The barrel is half way between the 1911 Officer and Commander size. The length is about the same as the 1911 Officers. It's a tenth of an inch thinner than the 1911. I've read mostly good things about Glock accuracy and realiability.

Of course, I just mailed the check today so can't say for sure it's the right gun. Give me two weeks and I'll let you know. :D

Dan Wesson CBOB. It doesn't get any better than this for $1K. Super accurate, eats anything.

The unique design of the Glock trigger will take some getting used to. It is a two stage trigger. The first stage releases the safeties and cocks the weapon fully and the second stage activates the firing system. Now for accuracy of a Glock. well just take a look at this:

230 yards with a STOCK .40 caliber. There is nothing I enjoy more than out shooting a 5k Kimber or STI with a $500 Glock 36. Like going to Carnegie Hall it just takes practice. The gun don't make the shooter, the shooter makes the gun.

BTW, the guy in this video is NOT a professional. He is a teacher from Nashville TN area I am told.
