I just picked up a new 686 6". The trigger is pretty smooth and consistent on the revolver but I have a question. When pulled DA it's not as bad but when pulled SA, I am getting a very hollow, ping, or tinty type sound when the hammer falls. Is this normal? I've not had another new revolver do this. The closest is when I put a Wolff mainspring in another revolver and it made this sound. I've checked the strain screw and it's tight. The revovler seems to function ok, it's just the strange noise. Any help? Thanks.

That is normal for the latest series of L frames. I have a 4" which is almost new (has the lock) and a .22 617 L frame (also with lock) that I bought last December and they both have that sound. I have an older 6" 686 (no lock) which sounds completely different - sounds more solid. I think the newer ones sound different mainly because of the firing pin being on the frame instead of the hammer also the frames are cut different to accomodate the lock mechanisim. Those factors puls slightly different steel is probably what makes them sound different than the older S&W revolvers.

Some Smiths ping and some don't. My experience has been that one with all of the internal parts fitted correctly will ping. I have a 625-2 from 1988 that makes a beautiful ping. It is not a defect. Sometimes when doing trigger work on a Smith after replacing the springs it would ping when it did not before the work was done.

Thanks again. It shoots great. Just wish I could shoot as good as it's capable of. Like earplug says, when it's got a live round in it and I pull the trigger, I don't notice it. Strange! Guess I'll just chalk it up to actually getting a well fitted smith. It does have a nice smooth trigger. Wish it was a little lighter but it is smooth.
