New 6906 - I loves 3rd Gen Smiths....

Local gun shop had a 6906 sitting in the case...I had noticed it when I was in there on Saturday helping my mother buy her Bodyguard .38. As a gleeful member of the 3rd Gen Smith Cult, it was calling my name. I tried to resist...

Went back at lunchtime today. Still there. I looked at it...some holster wear, but not bad at all, reasonable trigger, sits SO well in my hand. 1 mag, no box. Price was marked $370. I was going to offer $325, figuring $350-ish after tax....I asked if there was any wiggle room, and he said $330 out the door. So, $311 before tax. It's always good to see what they offer before offering up a number!

Here she is - range report will be coming this weekend, but I expect nothing but utter reliability and nice accuracy .

Did you get these guns fixed sights intentionally or were there no adjustable sights available? S&W's second and third generation of guns were great. I wish they still made them. The 659 appealed to me because it was almost an exact copy of the old 59, which I thought was a beautiful but dysfunctional gun. The newer 5906 was in many ways a better gun, but given the choice, I'd take the 659 because it had the bushing and I liked the looks. (I really did love the old 59's looks and really wanted one. Then I read a magazine article saying a $49 Raven .25 ACP was a better gun because it worked -- and the S&W 39/59s jammed.)



So when the 459s came out, I really was excited...until I saw the Beretta 92. In the first series of government tests, the Beretta had a failure rate of once every 2,000 rounds. The 459, on the other hand, had a failure rate of once every 952 times. Both of these were astounding rates, and it showed that S&W had finally fixed the 59. But I went with the Beretta because I heard that S&W was going to be coming out with an all stainless steel version, and I wanted one of those. I was into stainless back then and I thought the Beretta was more durable. It had a beefy frame and no ejection port. Add to that that the Beretta had no ramp for the bullet to hang up on and it all pointed to it being a better gun.

I loved the Beretta, but when the 659 came out, I snatched one up like a hawk! The thing shot flawlessly and I didn't mind the size. It was a hi-cap 9mm, and it all stainless steel, and stainless autos that worked back in those days were unheard of without using greasy, gloppy lubricants so the frame and slide wouldn't bind. S&W had found a way of hardening the stainless steels in the guns so that they actually worked. Meanwhile, AMT stainless 1911s were jamming, as were their .380s and many other stainless autos.

Anyway, I ended up selling my Beretta eventually and just sticking with the 659. I still have it and a 5906, and love them both.



The biggest improvement on the 5906, for me,
was the inserted black plastic on the front sight.

Congrats! I went the other way -- started with a 6906 and then recently added a 3913 to my collection...now just need to add a 5906!

Hey Confederate - I got them all used, so didn't have the choice of fixed vs adjustable at the time of purchase on any of them.

That having been said, all are used as carry guns at one time or aanother, so I like the simple durability of the fixed sights.

Great buy. Why can't I get that lucky? I bought my first 3 gen, a 4586, in July. It's too heavy to carry, but makes a great night stand pistol.

Big-Bore Love

S&W's 3rd Gen pistols are very reliable and they shoot great.

Here's my only Gen III, an '89 5906 I bought about a year ago LNIB, all papers and 2 14 round mags. 350 out the door. Shot POA at 15 yards first time out, never had to touch the sights. Never had a single failure in over 1500 rds, just keeps getting smoother...

Here are my 5946 and 5906. I prefer the 06's single action, but am slowly getting used to the dao 46.

Took the new 6906 to the range today. As expected, it performed flawlessly, fed everything, and exhibited good accuracy. I'm super happy with it. The target here is 39 rounds, 7 yards, "timed rapid fire" (1 shot per second) offhand.
