I am about to make the plunge and buy a AR. I want one in .223, 20" bb. I need some advice. I live in the DFW area and one of the local dealers for Olympic arms can't be beat but they are a dealer. I have been looking at DPMS. any suggestions or good local AR dealers???? :what:

I don't know if Lone Star Guns in Plano has recovered from being burned out yet; but they are worth checking out for anything AR-related.

From the Lone Star web site:

UPDATED: November 29, 2004

STORE CLOSED; RECONSTRUCTION PENDING

The shopping center owner has designated a contractor, who has obtained permits for the restoration job. Completion is expected in four to six weeks. As of Thanksgiving, work had not begun. Even though we are closed, we are attending area gun shows and look forward to seeing you. We are also still selling Concealed Handgun License badges by Web orders from the link below.

Photos have been released by the insurance company. You can see how bad the damage was.

HAT HAPPENED? Lone Star Guns, Inc. sustained extensive damage during a fire the night of Sat., Aug. 22.

HOW BAD IS THE DAMAGE? The fire was confined to the repair shop area. However, the entire store and its contents were affected by water and caustic smoke. The contents have been ruled a total loss.

HOW DID IT START? Our insurance company's cause and origin investigator has determined the fire was started by an electrical appliance in our shop.

WHEN WILL YOU RE-OPEN? Maybe by Jan. 15.

Olympic ARs are getting a pretty bad reputation, they are being considered bottom of the line on quality. :barf:

Bushmaster, Rock River, DPMS, are all much better quality than Olympic.

Ya think? I own 2 DCM Match 1988 and a CAR AR 16 inch both shoot excellent. The DCM Match has a perfect fit. Owners seem to love them.

Maybe things changed since 88 and both my receivers are forged.

I have to say that the used Oly I bought back in 2000 is one of the better ones I own. The fit and finish is great and the rifle groups as well as the Armalites and Bushmaster I own. This is the only one I've had experience with but it has been a great example.

Buy a stripped forged lower receiver at the gunshop for 90-110 bucks and build the rest yourself! Order the upper online, Rock River Arms makes some affordable yet quality parts and uppers.

Both Oly Arms and DPMS have hit or miss reputations. For everyone who got a bum AR from them there is another who swears by them.

Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, and Rock River Arms have the best reputations of the AR world and I would go with them solely for resale value if you ever need to sell it for some reason since they hold their value better.

I live just outside of dallas and I looked around at the local gun stores and all of them were all way over priced for a simple 20" A2. So after searching the web, I heard all the praise of Rock River Arms and how they were cheaper than most others, while quality was equal or greater. So I set out to find a lower and an upper from reputable dealers. I bought my US Property marked lower from Legal Transfers ( http://www.ar15sales.com/ ) for ~300 and my upper from ADCO ( www.adcofirearms.com ) for ~400. I slaped them together and off I went, I couldn't be happier with the results, 10 shots @ 100 yards from sandbag rest was ~1-1.5 inch group. PM me if you would like to go out and shoot mine to see if it is the configuration that you want, or if you want to go with the roll your own route you can borrow my book that I bought on how to do it.

Get it from out of state. All the stores here also wanted $900-1000+ for an entry-level A2. www.aimsurplus.com is where I got my 20" Bushmaster. It's $719.95 and you pay no sales tax, just the shipping and FFL transfer fee.

My AR-15...and my 2 cents

I gotta Olympic Arms CAR-97 M4 in 223 rem that's a real shooter ! I dunno where that one poster heard the bad things about Olympic, but my experience is that it is one of the better rifles made, comes in plently of different calibers, and fit & finish are excellent. I did my homework before I bought, handled a few different makes and models ( Bushmaster, Colt, DPMS, etc ) and made my choice accordingly. I take what others say with a grain of salt, and form my own opinions...here is an OLY ARMS owners website/forum for you to check out...let me know what you decide...http://www.OA2.org/

The bad rep is coming from Olyimpic owner's postings on AR15.com, they might have been good at one time, but from what a lot of their owners are saying about their current rifles, you really don't want one.

As to the OLY ARMS owners website/forum, I have also read the complaints of deleted and edited posts that come with a forum that the company owns, the bad stuff just dissappears, and employees are posing as users. :uhoh:
