I've had my M&P 15 for over a year and get out monthly to shoot and have never had an issue with the stock grip it came with until I attended a carbine class last week. I found by the end of the day my hand was cramping up and the small ledge on the front of the grip became a nuisance. So that brings me to looking for a new grip. The ones that interest me the most are Ergo, Magpul and Hogue. The ones I'm looking at are rubberized and I believe they have storage in the handle. Some have an extension for the web of you hand and others don't. What are the pros and cons of the extension and if you have a non-stock grip what has worked for you.

Thanks in advance.
Chuck

I have a Magpul MOE+ and I like it. The rubberized coating gives me a better grip and it feels a bit larger than the standard A2 grip.

No real pros or cons to any of the rubbery grips. Just buy all three, see what you like, return the other two. Grips are personal.

I like a more vertical grip like the BCM Mod 3 or the Magpul K2 because I usually shoot with a more squared stance, which puts the wrist at a somewhat painful angle with standard grips like the A2, MOE, etc., so the more vertical angle helps that. No problems shooting all day with the BCM grip. I don't care for a rubbery grip, I would rather just stipple it, but again, it's all personal preference.

My favorites are:

MOE/MOE+

Hogue w/beavertail

UTG "sniper"

The UTG actually feels the best to me, but one caveat; it is wide, and can make it difficult to manipulate the selector. DPMS oversize selector is a fix, but that selector requires modification to clear the grip.

I'm rockin' that one on two rifles, including my .308:

The rest all sport MOE or MOE+ right now.

Have a gunsmith bud who converts standard A2 grips with removal of finger grooves, reduction in circumference and proprietary stippling...think high-dollar custom Glock grip mods at a substantial discount.

Although I'm a big fan of Hogue rubber and Magpul+ grips, have to say that the conversion works really well for a duty/self-defense carbine...sort of like your hand just doesn't want to turn loose of the grip.

I've got a Magpul MOE on my pistol, and a standard A2 grip on my carbine. But my carbine will be undergoing some changes this year, new grip, barrel, gas block, hand guard. I'll probably go with another MOE.

Thanks for the options guys. I'm heading to Cabelas tomorrow and will fondle what they have to see what works best.

I am a traditional 'bladed off/elbow up' shooter by choice, so I prefer very steep pistol grips. The Tangodown BG17 gives me the steepest rake that I've found for an AR pistol grip, and is what I use on all my AR's. It's not as nice as the Magpul for in-grip storage, but I'm buying them for the angle and not for the storage compartment.

I have had all three. All are good, but I prefer the MOE+. That's what I have on both my ARs right now. For me, the Hogue finger grooves got in the way and became uncomfortable with extended shooting. The Ergo was fine, but it was slightly skinny for my taste. The Magpul seems to be a cleaner, more hand-filling grip.

No problems shooting all day with the BCM grip. I don't care for a rubbery grip, I would rather just stipple it, but again, it's all personal preference.

I'm with you. I never have gotten used to rubber outer layer grips on anything. Guns, hand tools, or power tools. They twist my flesh unlike a hard plastic with a grip pattern that just lets me adjust my grip by grabbing tighter or looser.

Plus, the rubber overlay tends to wear off over time. Good thing an AR grip is an easy change! :)

I ended up with the Magpul MOE +. The size was good and the rubber on it wasn't too thick or mushy. I hope to get it put on this week and try it out on the weekend.

clarification: I like the rubberized Ergo. With the little filler installed in the trigger guard so you don't cut the heck out of your finger.

I need to hear more about this line of thinking. What is the problem with storing a spare set of optics batteries on the gun?
Seconded. Well, thirded(?) by now.

Batteries, like ammunition is a disposable item; what's wrong with taking along additional of either?

Hogue don't have compartments, but if you're storing batteries on your gun, you're doing it wrong.

I'll be sure to pass along this information to the dozens of companies like Magpul, Blackhawk, and CAA that put battery compartments in their stocks and grips.
