Andy, are you putting in this year? We're putting in for all cow hunts this year instead of trophy bull. I'd love to have an opportunity to get a bull take but I think my time in Arizona is running out. I'm planning on retiring in Oct of 08 and won't be living in Arizona after that.

For anyone else here at THR, the elk draw in Arizona is expensive for non residents. It's tough to get drawn if your an Arizona resident as well. Wish us luck!

Please don't take offense, but I do prefer Andrew. My parents and sister still call me Andy. I will answer to Andy for other folks, once.

Anyway, the group I've been putting in with the last couple years will be getting together in the next couple weeks to strategize on the elk draw. Not sure if we'll all in put as a group with two cow hunts for first and second choice, of if we'll put in separately with a trophy bull hunt first and cow second choice. If we do all put in separately we'd make sure the first and second choices matched. Even if one was lucky enough to draw a bull hunt it would only be one. The other three would still help out, if they had the time, and the lucky bastard would help out if any of the other three got drawn for cow too.

Three of the four of us have 2 bonus points each (hunter-ed plus failure in last year's draw), and the other guy has none (he still needs hunter-ed and had beginners luck in the draw). If we all put in together we'll still average out to 2 points for the group, though only barely. So there's some advantage there. But 4 elk, even yearlings, is a lot of animal to deal with. And if we put in as a group then if we don't get drawn nobody gets to hunt. If we put in separately we stand a good chance of getting at least 2 tags. If both of those got filled with big, old mama elk there'd still be plenty of meat to go around. Decisions, decisions.

We'll all miss you when you leave. But, I know why you're planning to leave and can't fault the reasoning. Lord only knows how much longer I'll be here myself. Could be many years, could be a few months. Job is tenuous at the moment. If I survive the inevitable blood-letting, or find a comparable/better job locally I'll stick around for a while. Otherwise I'm outta here.

I lived in AZ for 14 years, got drawn for Elk once. Did get a nice bull and had a shoulder mount made (which is too big for my house in SC). My wife got drawn 3 times in 4 years, twice for cow and then I kidded her about being so lucky and put in for bull, and she got it. Alas, she had a terrible guide. I only found her bulls in cow season, and cows in bull season. She was carrying the 270 on one of her cow hunts, and this magnificent bull stood up in front of us, 30 yards away, just glanced at us over his shoulder, and moved off slowly. I told my wife "shoot it, I'll saw the horns off". Fortunately she knew I was kidding!

No worries Andrew. Me and a buddy have been putting in for the last 3 years and have 2 bonus points as of now. I think we're going to put in together again this year. Another guy I work with wants to put in with us but he has never put in before and has no points at all. The main areas we have been several times is area 1 and 27. That's were we turkey hunted last spring and the elk were everywhere. Will most likely put in for that area again. Alpine is beautiful and Big Lake is full of trout.

thanks for the reminder, lenny. one of my fishing buddies lives in Alpine, it's so beautiful there. and congratulations on retirement, good luck wherever you end up.

If we all put in together it'll probably be the October cow hunt in Unit 9 first choice. Not sure about second choice, but probably unit 22 North October cows.

If we put in separately I'm thinking probably 22 North bull or maybe 9 bull for the first choice, with Unit 9 October cow second choice.

Lenny, if you put in for the early cow hunt in Unit 9 I can show you a great spot. Be fun to hunt with you too. Exactly which hunts do you think you'll put in for? I might try to convice my group to put in for the same area as a second choice (9 is certain to be first, since we've done so well there).

Never hunted 9 but am up for any adventure. We usually put in for areas 1, 27 and 6A for trophy bull. Will look at all the options cause at this point I don't care about horns, I only want steaks on the grill:D

Lenny, if you do put in for Unit 9 (the October hunt) let me know if you get drawn there. I'd be happy to introduce you to the guys I've been hunting with. I'm sure they'd be happy to have you there too.

I like 9, ALOT of habitat.

Late season (1st week in Dec) this year in 9 was COLD!!! (5 degrees f:eek: )

In Oct it ain't so bad. Most days you can hunt in shortsleeves, though the nights get a touch chilly. Still, I've been known to sleep in the bed of my Ranger (no camper shell) up there.

It's great if you shoot your elk in the late afternoon since you can hang it overnight. But if you shoot it in the morning you gotta work fast to get it cut up at least enough to get in a cooler with some ice.

Lenny - We've made our decision on the draw stratagy. Most of us are going to put in for 22 North bulls (Nov 30-Dec 6) for the first choice with the early Unit 9 cows second. At least one of the group is only going to put in for 9 and skip the bull choice. I figure we might get lucky with a single bull tag, but even without it should get 2-3 cow tags out of five people total (the four of us that put in last year plus the 16 year old son of the guy that got the only tag last year).

They all said they'd be happy to have you join us for the cow hunt.

Sounds good. Me and Tim are holding 3 bonus points each but don't know how much longer we will be stationed here in Tucson. I know I'll most likely be gone by fall of 08 from here so we want to get in an elk hunt this year. That's why we were going all cows this year. As much as I'd like horns, meat in the freezer is better.

How are the bulls up in 9?

We are getting together this afternoon after a trip to Sportsmans Warehouse to discuss our draw strategy. Of course it will be over a couple of beers and some venison fajita's.:D

There's been more than one record bull taken from 9. My buddies saw a big 6x6 that had been poached during this past cow season, and the year before we glassed 3 good looking bulls opening morning (we had cow tags, and both scored that afternoon). It's really hard to draw bull tags there because it is such a good area.

Beer and venison fajitas ... my mouth is watering.
