Excited to say the least. Walked in to the local fun store with intentions on picking up a 1911 or a 44mag lever gun. I then found a marlin 1895g ported in .45-70. Wood is in great condition the bluing as some scratches. Build date is 1998 based on the serial number. It's JM stamped which is what most people look for. Dealer asking $429 got him to throw in a box of ammo ($40). Walked out the door with the gun and 40rounds of factory ammo under $500. Can't wait for hunting season to arrive!

Sorry for crappy iPad pics

Nice rifle, now ya gotta get rid of that ugly safety on the receiver with a screw looking thing. I can't think of the guy that sells them but I know he's out of Wisconsin somwhere. I've got one just like it and it will hold a moa at a hundred yards with a Leopold scope turned to 4X.

Possible future plans may include a guide style scope(1x4 forward mounted) I kinda like the open sight for range play but a 1x4 maybe more useful.

Anybody here reload for the .45-70? I load a lot of cast in 9mm and .357mag and will soon start loading for this as well. Seems like a lot of people use laser cast bullets. Any other favorites that I should know about. 350+ gr preferred

New big bore : how did I do

JUSTINPAR: You did great I am very happy for you. My Son and I have 3 1895 Marlin 45-70`s. We really like them they are a real joy to carry and hunt with. We use a light load most of the time 35grs IMR 3031 and a hard cast 405 gr RNFP bullet`s. We are geting 1250 to 1350 FPS and is very comfortable to shoot. I have shot Pigs, Deer, and a few Coyotes with this load and not lost any thing. Most of the time the game is laying right where you hit it never had to look very far, at most 20 to 30 yards, and that is rare. My Son shoots the Garret and Corbon loads and they work very well for him. We use the Hornady Leverevolution 325gr plastic tip bullets and really think they are great they will give you 50 to 100 yrds more range. Lazer cast bullets are fine, We have found the the 405 gr RNFP bullets are juat great. The 45-70 is very easy to reload for we think. And there is nothing in North America you can not hunt safley with the 45-70. Again you did good Justin.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU: ken

Check out the Beartooth bullets. I like the 525gr Piledriver and the 425 piledriver jr. Both shoot well from my gun. I use the lazercast 405 For plinkers. they shoot well but not as wekk as the beartooth bullets.
