After shooting my Savage 223 for two seasons at out informal bench league I had intended to rebarrel the rifle with a Shilen 6ACR and develop that for this medium range bench shooting. Sadly outside forces got involved and I had to give up my PT job at the range for the summer therefore also giving up my spendable fun income. So now it looks as though I will once again be shooting the Savage chambered in 223. Though I was able to upgrade the scope from an Athlon Helos 6-24 FFP to more of a Bench Scope in an Athlon Argos 10-40X56 SFP with a target reticle. So that should help with scores.

Also last year I shot 69gr SMK using A2460 powder as it was the most consistent load I could come up with at the time with the sample bullets I had on hand. I might have shot Barnes Match Burners as they were an even trade-off or maybe just slightly better but they were not available anywhere.

Now being at the same point as last year at this time and needing to place an order for bullets while going through my left-overs I found a box of 100 Hornady 60gr VMAX that I have never opened or tried. Since have done some preliminary testing and seeing great promise with two different powders. TAC and Benchmark. So will be picking up another few boxes this weekend and giving these another round of testing. These look like they may shoot even better than the 69gr.

I like the Hornady 75gr bullets. Seems they will always shoot pretty good. I use n540 and I’m getting 3009fps out of my 20” Remington 700
