So I been talking w my gunsmithing buddy. Looking to do a project. Want to build something up from a K98 action rebarreled to a 25-06. Stated there is additional milling lathe work etc for that round. But if I do a 257 roberts its much easier conversion. Has anyone done this. Are there any snazzy after market stocks for the k98 action?

Love to hear your knowledge. Where and what to look for a k98 action and one of quality?

Check out Pacific Tool and Gauge for good deals on a three position swing safeties and speed lock kits (their products are high quality and the CS is great). Sunny Hill enterprises for detachable mags or hinged floor plates and other accessories.

A 25-06 should fit in a K98 just fine, you would only have to do extra machining in a short action Mauser though, the 257Robert's is a more efficient round and probably a gooder choice anyway.

There is also something to be said about guns not produced under the stress of war, the fit and finish is usually much better. But, if you must have the swastikas...
 
There are lots of sources for new and used actions, but demand is high right now and there might be a wait or a premium to pay to get one. What are you trying to build? Style, caliber, etc are all important. That will help define where to look.
 
Looking for a 500 plus yard gun to knock down a pig. Looking for big bore guns and highly precise. I love target shooting long ranges. I reload as well too to help w efficiency. Looking at 257 roberts or 25 06. Maybe 308 but not sure on 308.

Big bore and 25-06/257 Roberts don't match up. Big bore is debatable, but is anything over .375 to me. You can build an accurate 500 yard gun on a Remington, Savage, Ruger, Mauser, etc or even buy one off the rack. Have you looked at what Savage offers? They tend to be very accurate and less expensive than many others. You could most likely buy a most suitable factory gun for much less coin.

Just an example - I own an early Savage 110 in .243 with a pencil barrel that has never been scoped. I shoot it out to 400 yards with iron sights and hit whatever I want to hit. I do have to let it cool after 4 shots, but if it ain't dead by then, it ain't due to the gun.
 
Simpson's LTD has quite a few old Husqvarna rifles for reasonable prices, these actions are either "sporterized" large ring Mausers, "strengthend" small rings, or a cross between a Mauser and a Sako. They are awesome guns for the money. And, the milsurp blowhards won't get all huffy about you putting a scope on a rifle they didn't buy.

I built a 25-06 on a M98 action (actually a 1909 Argentine). Put a 26" Shilen barrel on it, new safety, etc. NO action, rail, etc work was required and it functions perfectly. AND it shoots like it 'has eyes'. Very accurate indeed.
