New CDC report being used to criticize gun laws

The CDC looks at public health issues as disease issues as well as what the average persont thinks of their role. Looking at homicides as a public health issue along with obesity and health, age and vehicle accidents, youth impulsiveness and severe injury and deaths all fall into that basket. The important thing is to be certain of the science and that political or social bias isn't introduced so objective information comes out for use.

The data from the UCR does show that some states with liberal laws on gun ownership and carry do have high firearms homicide rates, but it also shows that some states with conservative laws on ownership have high rates of firearms homicides. It is harder to parse the data within states to see communities, but that information is also available and if you were to drop 2 counties out of TN and 2 out of IL both states would plummet in the rate of homicides overall and not just firearms related homicides. I'll leave it to you to look up which 2 counties, but one is obvious for either TN or IL.

Note also that CDC numbers include "legal intervention," as do a lot of "gun violence" statistics. In other words, when cops or security guards shoot someone, those incidents are included in the stats.
