New Charter Arms Police Undercover

I kind of like it. I do think the large font is silly for anything "undercover", but if it works its cool :)

About a year ago I saw advertised a new model Hi Polish Police Undercover with 3” barrel and fixed sights. Was never on the Charter Arms website - which gets updated haphazardly - and never saw one in the wild. So back in November of last year I called Charter and asked about ordering one. They said no problem and took my order. I was expecting a longer wait when I saw few steel frame revolvers being produced, so when this arrived the other day it was a pleasant surprise.

Even more surprising was the standard 2.2” barrel. I was thinking a 3” barrel might be a good length, but after handling this one, I like the package.

Take a look at the barrel markings - very clean. Appears to be laser etching.

Total weight as delivered 20-3/8 ounces. Don’t have my trigger gauge handy, but seems about 9-1/2 pounds, with the usual Charter trigger stroke. However, the is much smoother with no roughness whatsoever. Charter Arms uses three different mainsprings, and this model was equipped from the factory the lightest (blue) spring. B/C gap measures 0.025” with no noticeable end-shake… hopefully there will be no binding issues. If past is prologue with Charters, b/c gap should open to .004-.006 after a few hundred rounds and stay there.

Not much point to a mirror finish on an “Undercover” wheelgun. o_O

Not to mention, seeing a loud “Undercover” rollmark etched on the barrel is about as off-putting as a “Special Forces” rollmark. :barf:

I have a Police Undercover made in 2021 and it has the standard matte (?) finish. The trigger on it is very nice. I had checked out one back in 2015 and the trigger was atrocious. I know that Charter switched to lighter mainsprings. I got a few and replaced the one in my .357 Mag Pug, and now it has a much nicer trigger.

My Police Undercover is a really sweet-shooting little revolver that feels great in the hand. I like the shiny finish on yours. I'm not crazy about the new laser etched markings that I've seen pop up on multiple models recently, but they aren't a deal-killer for me.

A true “Under Cover” gun is one that no local department or agency uses. Add to that a mixed payload of two different rounds that gun my just keep you healthy if accidentally discovered depending on the “under cover” role. So in a way it might work for that purpose. Some things people know some things they think they know!

I think its a great looking revolver.. the polished stainless makes it easy to clean … I have owned several Taurus revolvers with the polished finish in the past … I had a 605 once , I carried it while doing yard work and working around the barn

I once had a mirror polished Taurus 44. That gun was one of the best they ever made, but the mirror finish was awful. It had so much glare that I had to pass on a decent buck because I couldnt see him when I raised the pistol to aim. I didn’t pass him a few days later with the .270.

I found time for 50 rounds at the 7 Yard indoor range, but had no time for the chronograph unfortunately. This one shoots very well. Mostly fired single action, some DA groups also. Mix of factory and handloads. All went bang on the first hit, no cylinder binding. Cases ejected easily with a single rap on the ejector rod. Not a peep of leading in the bore despite some loads that lead other barrels. Was using a conventioanl center hold, and POI is somewhat low, as is usual with Charters. That wouldn't miss center mass out to 30 feet, but I will probably file in the front sight to a center hold at 50 feet. All in all, very pleased.

A little bit too shiny for my tastes in ccw pistols, but shiny or not it does look like you have found yourself a shooter there!

Is the front sight face black, or another color, or is it natural? I seem to have huge issues trying to shoot indoors with any of my stainless or nickel revolvers without having to color the front sight. Your Charter shot so well that I thought I would ask.

Stay safe.

Are they all getting laser etching now?

Get rid of that nickel plated sissy pistol and get yourself a Glock jk. In all seriousness it looks really nice. I was considering the 3 inch polished Mag Pug for a while but could never seem to find one. Was also interested in their Target Mag Pug too but ended up with a Ruger Security Six.

I've got an old Charter Undercover and I'm amazed how much smaller and lighter it is compared to my S&W mod. 49 bodyguard 5 shot .38.
