That's a great photo ArmoredFarmer. What shutter speed and aperture?

You must be some sort of eccentric oddball to even join our ranks?

I am not sure what that means but OK.:what: This is my first flintrock but I have owned at least 12 BP rifles in the past and have 5 rifles and two single shot handguns on hand now.

I think the Dark Side is when you get a Flintlock Smoothbore. I'm not going there.:eek:

Per the tracking number my gun should be here late Monday. We are always the last stop for the UPS man.

Congratulations on your new flintlock.

Welcome.

Armored Farmer I think I know what you mean now. I laugh, joke, cut up and play pranks on my friends. They all think I'm nuts. Thats OK. I have fun everywhere I go. I can't wait to get this gun and do some shooting with it. I bought a full stock Pedersoli a couple of months ago and posted about it here but I really don't like it that much. I am going to list it on GB and that will pay for my new gun. You never know. I may go plum crazy and fall into the "Rock Sparker" hole like so many others have. Sort of like I did with Fly Fishing when I was 17-20 years old. It was the only way I wanted to fish. And I caught a lot of fish too.

Flint lock smooth bore has to be the most versatile black powder gun out there, l have shot quail using birdshot and shot at rabbits with a patched ball with my 20 gauge trade gun. Takes some getting used to, but once you try it you'll have a lot of fun. Plus it's a great deer gun if you get close. Hitting an animal with a lead bowling ball tends to drop them pretty fast.

Ratshooter,
After you get settled in with the new rifle and shot it a few times, post your thoughts on it.
I, like yourself, have owned a couple of percussion BP rifles and would like to try my hand at a flintlock.

Don't bet too much on that. ROFL

I am just going to tiptoe quietly around the smoothbore flinter. I said the same thing about casting bullets. I'll never do that. But when my dad gave me about 300 pounds of lead I started casting. Now I have 1400 pounds of lead on hand. Somewhere close to 30 bullet molds and thousands of bullets cast up ready to load. Never say never.

I have an H&R Tamer 20ga shotgun. It came with the stock that sort of looks like a Snake Charmer buttstock. I couldn't use it as it came so I ordered a proper stock. Now this little short, lightweight gun is my favorite shotgun. Its close to what a smoothbore trade gun would be. Its the perfect canoe gun. So I am just a small step away from a smoothbore flinter. I can see how they would be useful. But like it says in the bible, "Get three behind me Satan. And don't push".

I will do that. Now that we are finally getting rain and its cooling off I am going shooting. Maybe next week if I can run up some flints. I have everything else. I have a couple of other BP guns to shoot also. A CVA Kentucky pistol I just built and a Cabelas Hawken .54 I bought 5+ years ago and have never shot.

Shanghai I will keep it in mind. My new rifle just arrived and I have been sparking it a little. I have some worn out TC flints that don't work so good and a couple I made myself last night that spark really well. I am going to order some real flints and give this a try to see if I am a flintlock shooter first.

Ok Shanghai. But I will keep it in mind. I have been out sparking it. I am using a flint chip I made. That sucker sparks good too. Sometimes it will leave a glowing piece of metal in the pan. I have no doubts with good flints this will be a reliable shooter.

And to Mn Fats who made the generous offer to give me his adjustable rear sight my gun did come with the adjustable sight in the box. So I don't need it but thank you for the offer.

I think the rain is about over so I will try to make out to shoot this gun this week. I have 4 BP guns I need to shoot. One I have had for 5+ years I have never fired and the new CVA pistol I just finished building. I will post my thoughts on the guns when the shooting is done.

i love my flintlock and just sold my last percussion rifle so flintlocks are the only way to go but remember get a lock boot cover for the rain dixie gun works has them! mine i did from a kit year before last it's a 45 caliber flintlock kentucky rifle and i just love it with a 1-66 twist for my favorite thing to shoot which is a roundball! :)

Midland Man you and I totally agree about the 45 caliber rifle and the round ball load. I have molds for conicals but just like the good ole' round ball. Its been makin' meat for 3 centuries and killed a lot of people in between. I remember reading about an Indian grave that was dug up and they found two round balls in the dirt that the Indian was shot with. I will get back with you later about the flintlock and how much I like it. And I have a new to me Pennsylvania rifle. A Pedersoli Dixie Pennsylvania I bought off GB for $355 IIRC. I have a post here somewhere about it. I think about page 7 if you look. Its one of the guns I plan to shoot. I have never fired it yet.

I haven't reached the point where I am ready to get rid of my percussion guns. I really like them. Here is a post I made one another BP site about the power of the round ball and 70grs of powder.

"I got out my Lyman BP handbook and looked up some of the velocities for 70gr charges in 45, 50 and 54 caliber. Powder is G-O FFFg except the first listing. Strangly enough Lyman did almost all the rifle test with 3F powder. They pretty much only used 2F in the 58 caliber. And the 70gr loadings in 58 caliber were pretty weak.

45 caliber 28" barrel: PRB w/70grs 2F 1670fps and 822 FPE 260 FPE at 100 yards.
45 caliber 28" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1994fps and 1172 FPE and 332 FPE at 100 yards.
45 caliber 32" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1977fps and 1152 FPE and 328 FPE at 100 yards.
45 caliber 40" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1925fps and 1190 FPE and 315 FPE at 100 yards.

50 caliber 28" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1587fps and 1005FPE and 365FPE at 100 yards
50 caliber 32" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1663fps and 1104FPE and 389FPE at 100 yards.
50 caliber 43" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1725fps and 1188FPE and 408FPE at 100 yards.

54 caliber 28" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1375fps and 922FPE and 409FPE at 100 yards.
54 caliber 34" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1439fps and 1010FPE and 431FPE at 100 yards.
54 caliber 43" barrel: PRB w/70grs 3F 1527fps and 1137FPE and 462FPE at 100 yards.

Since this is the round ball section I didn't include any data for conicals. But they do strike harder at 100 yards than the balls do. I have checked a few of these velocities with my own chronograph and they are very close to what I got from the same barrel lengths. Longer barrels definitely give a real velocity boost."

Notice how well the 45 cailber does against the bigger bores. And look how well the 45 does with just a 28" barrel. This is why I have so much respect for a 45 caliber gun.:thumbup::thumbup:

I forgot to add that when its raining thats when you sit in camp and play dominoes and drink whiskey. I don't like getting wet. I may have been a cat in another life.
