I just bought a Glock 17 ,my first Glock. I have been shooting 1911's. The reason I got it was to shoot a leauge at a local range thinking It would be cheaper, more reliable. and most of the guys shoot them. They do work, can't argue that! I just can't get comfortable with it. When I grab it I have to think about how to grip it , force myself to point it down range. I'm shooting pretty well with it, just kinda feels like I'm dating my cousin. Maybe I need to give it more time, I've only put about 500rds through it but i'm real tempted to shoot the Kimber next week. Anyone else go through this?

One mistake I made when i bought my first Glock (34) was not giving it enough time. I was used to 1911's as well. I ended up going through a long list of pistols over the years and ended up going back to Glock (20). Finaly I just dedicated myself to my G-20 and now nothing else feels right, not even my beautifull Sig P226.
Give it time. The triggers get better, they start to feel very natural, and the G-17 is one of the most durable, maintanance free pistols ever made.
I'm going to get a G-34 (again) next week for IDPA because the ones with 10 round mags are $80 off!!!
P.S. One aftermarket part that is very worthwhile is a set of Heinie slant pro sights. I like the plain black ones myself, they also come in night sight versions.
They have the best target picture of any sight. Other nightsights are OK, but the Heinie's are far better for IDPA, pins, buyllseye etc...

Congrats on your new G17. IMHO it's one of the best full size 9s made. Give it more time before you put it away. You'll be surprised how much it'll grow on you.:D

I have the same problem. The glock grip angle is unlike most other guns out there. I can shoot it fine, but I have to think about it. My other guns shoot more naturally to me. I understand they don't pose any problems for others, but I couldn't justify the change for just one gun. I guess that is why they make so many differnet kinds of handguns -- well that and to make sure there is always one more gun we want :)

Grip differences? I have a g17 as well and go between 1911 and revolver all the time in IDPA. I do not really notice a problem for me. Although I have rather large hands and that could account for the ease of shooting between the 3 guns. My only problem that I have had is shooting a revolver and 1911 or g17 in the same IDPA match and trying to load a mag in the revolver grip... That was good for a laugh...

I love my G17, it is hands down the best pistol i've ever owned/shot. It took me about 1k rounds to get used to the way it shoots but after that it was nothing. I have noticed that if I take other guns to the range (or just behind my house to the makeshift range) it takes a few minuites to get back on target fully with the other pistols... But then I pick the glock up and it's right on the money instantly...

Don't give it up, put a few thousand rounds through it and it will be love, especially the full back recoil as apposed to most of my other pistols which pull up, the glock is so easy to keep on target, and doubletapping becomes easier and easier. Before I bought the gun I had problems with the no direct safety, but i'm actually for it now. Glocks are safe weapons, as long as you know what you're doing....Like the website says, the only way to discharge a glock is to pull the trigger.

Glocks have a lot of available accessories as well...But I wish my G17 had a rail :( even though, the guide rod laser sight is very very nice...

Congrads on your glock, and have fun...

Your "muscle memory" has been attuned to the 1911 grip angle for a long time, so the Glock will point high. If you dedicate yourself to the Glock for a while, it will feel more natural. Then, when you shoot your 1911, it will point low. ;)

FWIW, Robar Industries can reshape the Glock grip to the profile/angle of a 1911 with a flat mainspring housing. You can do the same thing with a belt sander and some epoxy glue (that's how they do it), but it will likely look like crap. ;)

Congrats on the new gun!

I took me a little while to get used to the Glock pistol, but now I can go back and forth between a 1911 and a Glock without a problem.

Stick with it, you'll get it!

I have access to a lot of different service pistols in virtually all common calibers but MY personal favourite full size hi-cap 9 mm pistol is definitely the G17. The first thing I do when a new pistol design or model variation appears is to compare its features to the Glock. In my opinion, among the many modern duty sidearms there's still none better than the Glock, especially the G17.

When training novice shooters at the range I have found that a lot of them do quite well with the Glock. That's probably also the reason why the Glock is so popular with the police, both in the U.S. and abroad. A Recruit that has never touched a handgun can do quite well with the Glock right from the beginning. The Glock also has a rather simple, K.I.S.S. ("Keep It Simple, Stupid) manual of operation. Furthermore, because of its ergonomics, ease of controllability, hi-capacity and durability the G17 is a superior sidearm to have in the moment of truth.

I've started shooting with 1911 Custom pistols and I was quite pampered by their light, crisp single-action trigger. I agree, the G17 is somewhat more difficult to master than a 1911, but definitely easier than the various "traditional" DA autos. It just takes a little range time and patience.

You've made a great choice. Stick to your Glock 17. I do.

All the best!

HMMMMM

:p , Must say, If i must, "yes I must", the G17 is the all time maternal/paternal-twin/ little/ bother/sister=cal wise- of the 1911. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but.....while I was shooting my kimbers' 45 acp in IDPA, My girlfriend joined and started shooting a Glock 17, needless to say I had to keep my "EGO in check"not that I ever could shoot, she shot great, no training, just a few informal range rules and ***SAFE HANDELING OF A FIRE-ARM***,prev with me while shooting 45 acp, "which she did "ENJOY"-but found it physically draining", Her and the g17 convinced me to get a G17. At a Glock a match they offered them at a great price, and I forget at this time what it was, but since then I've extended my glock family. G17 is a keeper, even though my GF stopped competing she kept hers, Thousands of rounds through it, the only MALFS-ever "she lost count on loading and started forcing 11 into the mags, thats the only Malf/hiccup ever. ITS A REAL WORK HORSE, NOW if only they could engineer a PICK-TRUCK like a glock. PS MY 45 acp is still the Best though:neener:

The G17 w/ the Big Sticks, can get costly when you load 10 of em up and think it'll last like your using 10rdrs  1/2 hour later and 330 rds through er' I'm running home for more food, I realized er' appetite increased w/ my pleasure :D

If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. I don't like the long heavy trigger with the little dingus on Glocks. blech.

Glocks are like Glenlivit Scotch. they are an acquired taste.
Some people can take to the taste in just one shot, other folks need to gulp a bottle or two before they stop grimacing.
