Well, after much deliberation I finally convinced myself to get a 10mm G20 for my backwoods defense needs. After shooting it a few times, I am kicking myself in the arse for not "discovering" this amazing caliber and this amazing gun much sooner. :banghead:

The gun itself is no different than any other large Glock, and it feels great in my gangly, piano-wielding hands. The gun was totally reliable through the first 100 rounds. I used Blazer 200gr FMJ-FP, and some PMC 200gr FMJ... I am still waiting on my order from DoubleTap for some real "duty-grade" stuff. However, even the "range-grade" ammo packs a nasty punch, and places itself accurately out of this gun.

I tossed a pair of Trijicon night sights on there, and I am waiting for my steel recoil spring rod. Besides that, the gun needs nothing but ammo IMO.

How does it shoot? Amazingly, the recoil is very acceptable. Actually, I feel more discomfort after 100 rounds out of my G26 than I did shooting the G20. It does however give out a nice blast of high atmospheric pressure... like when you shoot a magnum revolver at an indoor range and the pressure can be felt in your chest and skull. It does not translate into brutal recoil though. My hands felt fine, and I was even able to keep all 15 rounds on the paper in rapid fire at 10 yards. As for target-style shooting, the gun does great. At 25 yards, it is not uncommon for bullet holes to overlap one another in a group.

In general, the gun exceeds my expectations. It got pretty wet over the weekend when a Zeus-grade thunderstorm blasted our hiking trail with torrential rains and 1/4" hail stones at over 10,000 feet. However, the Glock 20 seemed unphased by the water. When the storm passed, I wiped off the gun, mag, and mag well and it was good to go. When I consider this, plus the high capacity of high-powered cartridges it carries, I believe that I made the right choice.

I've been wanting a high-cap 10mm for some time, and although I'm not thrilled by GLOCK ergonomics, I must say, they're about the only game in town. (I want customer service available if need be, so EAA is out.)

KBintheSLC, I have also thought of getting the G20. I talked to my friend in Florida over the weekend and he gave the same glowing review you did. I hope to in the future add this pistol to my collection.

I was never a big Glock fan, but the G20 is the only game in town when it comes to a reliable $500-ish 10mm.
I finally bought one, and it has been great. I reload, and the 10mm is great fun to load for. You can load anything from sub-40 caliber loads that have no recoil, to hot 10mm loads that blow fire and great concussion waves. It is still an ugly pistol, but a very practical and useful ugly pistol.

I fired a G20 when they were newly released, and the recoil is amazingly different from a Colt Delta Elite.

Far less recoil from the Glock, and much more pleasant to shoot.

Aaargh, I know! Don't you hate that?!

1911Tuner and OldFuff have talked me out of considering 1911, too (Dan Wesson would be the clear favorite there), so it's either a light, Luger-grip-angled Glock, with its unsupported chamber, or a used S&W 1006.

with its unsupported chamber,
That was only present on the .40 S&W for a period of time (they've fixed it since).

Never an issue in the G20 and G21 line (and not a 'real' issue on the 40 S&W unless you were running weak brass)

It is still an issue with my new 3rd gen G20. I use a LWD barrel in mine to keep smilies at bay.
Off the top of my head, the stock barrel will allow case head expansion of around .430+, but the LWD barrel stops it cold at .425
I am at work, but I am pretty sure of these figures. If anyone wants to truly be sure, reply and I will run a few through both barrels to check tonight. I use a Starret Micrometer to check, and not dial calipers.

I have never shot another 10mm platform, but the Glock is very manageable in the recoil sector... even compared to my G26 which is more of a sharp poppy recoil.

Interesting... I'll have to bring my caliper to the range for some before and after measurements. I visually inspected the various brass/aluminum casings and saw no visible signs of bulging or cracks caused by lack of support. But the numbers you gave seem too small to see with the naked eye. That will be a good one to look at.

I don't think he's talking about the "Let's scallop out the bottom of the chamber so the bigger .40 S&W cartridges can feed properly" unsupported chamber issue.

Well, I'm going off of what I read on 10mmtalk, regarding firing full-house loads in them; those that did, with factory barrels, said that they would get "smiley faces" on the bottoms of their ejected cases.

With regular ammo, I don't think it was an issue, but I'm more interested in 10mm for what it's capable of, which is also why I complained about it being made of non-heavy material.

Glock 20 10 MM

One heck of a bargin for a 10MM Hi-Cap If you dont like he finger grooves do what I did. mask off grip with duct tape start sanding , filing, grinding the bump down fimish with automotive wet sand paper 400 grit to 600 grit it will feel better and look almost like that the way it camee. I wish I had a photo of mine to show ya! its easy!

I love the G20 - DT is all mine has ever seen. Not one single feed failure or malfunction and she is accurate like a laser beam.

Now you need a G29. And don't say you won't get one. After buying my 2nd Gen G20 I swore I wouldn't get a G29. After my first range trip with DoubleTap ammo the very next gun store I went in that had a G29 twisted my arm and forced me to take it home. The G29 is a real blast.

I just went to the range last night to test some full-power loads from DoubleTap and make sure my steel guide rod functions well. I fired 30 of the 165gr Golden Sabers, and 30 of the 200gr FMJ-FP penetrators. I also fired 100 more rounds of PMC 200gr FMJ range ammo. I carefully inspected the cases and found no bulges or anything that resembles a smiley face on any of it. Not sure what folks are referring to, but I don't see it. Maybe you guys can post some photos of these smiley's... I am intrigued I must admit.

It fed and fired all of these rounds very well. The 200gr penetrators from DoubleTap are VERY accurate and notably powerful out of this gun. And, their ammo does not create the massive flash of the cheap range ammo.

The guide rod from Glockstore.com works great and is very well built. It really smoothed up the action into a buttery breech locked bliss.

As I said before... autoloader heaven.

AS much as I detest Glock it may be my only option here in CA for a 10MM Semi Auto.

Do you mind me asking why? I have heard folks say how bad they hate Glocks, but I have never had a problem with any of mine... seems like LEO's around the world seem to like 'em too. Please share.

You're short by about 28-48 magazines :)
