The red finish can be stripped off. It's kinda funny, the folks on ColtForum swear that the proper color for a blackpowder era Colt one-piece walnut grip is Fiebing's dark brown leather dye. Here's a Uberti refinished and stained with the leather dye and one with the factory Uberti finish. Same color.

Like your holsters. Nice border pattern on the bottom one.

These are a set i'm working on right now. Picked up 2 sets for 16.00 shipped off of ebay!
Hard, HARD wood. Not sure what these are made from but much harder than walnut and harder than oak!
I'm thinking some exotic.
After doing a little shaping and sanding I tried scratching them with my thumbnail, no go!

Great deal!!
Search for unknown grips. Or check my post in the black powder forum.

They fit my 51 piette great albeit a little longer in the butt.

I just finished this set. Used dogwood I cut down. I like the darker finish more than the first pair I made even though I rushed these a bit and the fit isn’t as tight.

Thanks! That was my first attempt at heavy aging. Part of a five holster, money belt plainsman rig that I never finished. It's tough to put all that effort into a finished holster, then fold it in half several times and rub the hell out of it with steel wool and Scotchbrite. ;)

Nice work.
I'm no woodworker , not even close but I've been considering giving a set of grips a try. I was going to buy a custom set (my only option for a FA ) but kung-flu damaged my gun funds :(. I might just give it a go , I wouldn't expect great results but if I take my time they could be presentable (hopefully).

If your frame will accept them, two piece grips are easier to make.

But, there is an easy way to build one piece grips. Make both grip panels and then glue a properly dimensioned spacer between them.

I much prefer grips without that medallion, especially on Single Action revolvers. I've made a couple of pairs of grips in the past, don't want to make a habit of it, though.

I made these one-piece style for a Colt SAA some forty-plus years ago:

Here more recently, one-piece style for a Hy Hunter Single Action:

And on the gun:

I say "one piece style" as they are two separate panels with a center spacer glued in.

Your grips turned out very good. What did you use for a finish?

Bob, that brass framed SAA looks like my old Uberti did. Man, with those grips it makes one sharp Looking revolver!!!

Stay safe.
