any advice on a good carriage design?

Look at the gun carriages for the 24 pdr naval guns.

You're one of the few that is really ready if the British come back here. ;)

Educate me on the bore photo. Is that the empty barrel or a ball placed in the muzzle?

Also, what are you going to use for cannon balls?

that is the empty barrel. we have a mold for a 1.70 ball normally used for sinkers

Some years ago a friend of mine was using a fishing sinker mold for his gun, and casting the balls from a NON-FIBERGLASS (I yelled because that's important) automotive body filler. Way cheaper than lead, shot really flat, and even came out black instead of the typical Bondo grey-pink. He used to squeeze the filler into the mold using a cake decorator bag, or something similar. I never saw the process, so I don't know how much time it took.

One thing to consider is a scaled naval carriage will not transport over uneven terrain well, so depending on where you're planning on shooting, a field carriage might make more sense.

I have a 2 cavity 1# fishing sinker mold that is 1 11/16th which works very well for lead and concrete projectiles from my 1.75" swivel cannon. Bolted down, shooting lead balls creates a lot of moment on the swivel yoke; but my gun is 50#, so the additional weight of yours might make the recoil very manageable.
