Hi All -

I was wondering if someone could help me out. I just got a Weatherby Vanguard 2 in, and I was wiping it down, with Ballistol, and it appeared as though a reddish-brown color was coming off the gun. Looking at the gun, it appears normal, but the red tint scared me a bit. Is it common for packing grease to be all over the barrel with a reddish-brown color?

Was that reddish color showing up when you wiped down the wooden stock or was this strictly off of the barrel and other metal parts?

If it is just from the metal, you might have a tiny bit of rust starting on the surface. If it is off the wood AND this is an older gun, you might be taking off a little of the varnish that has gotten "sun-faded".

Hope this helps.

Right wrong or otherwise I would say its mild oxidation some would call :scrutiny:rust. The Weatherby V is a lesser expensive gun, correct? Still nice but less $, they had to cut corners somewheres and that all to often is finish.

I bought a Ruger 380 pistol (registered, new) and had finish wear on the ejection port- visible portion of the barrel in less than 50 rounds. Called them they said it was normal and would stop after a few more rounds. Also to call them back if otherwise.

Co$t savings equals lesser stocks, and finishes. Wipe it down real good and keep it oiled as per manufacturers manual instructions, and, as a prudent firearms owner should. ''No worries'' But perhaps, a call to them at Weatherby would be a good idea? Per chance it continues or gets worse, you have a reference and if for no other reason, they know there is a potential problem in manufacturing. GO OUT N SHOOT:thumbup:

And post a pic of those 100 yd subMOA groups;)

Many rust inhibitors show that color, just as Hoppe's #9 and other bore solvents. You are doing the right thing by getting that stuff out of the bore before shooting, as it is a protectant and not a good lubricant or solvent. Cosmoline or packing grease has been supplanted by VPI, dessicant packs and oily rust inhibitor films. No worries.
