You absolutely MUST be in shape for those hunts. The places where those charters go are rugged and you have to scramble pretty hard through the thickets. I've friends who've come back from those hunts and they tell stories of fellows giving up and heading back to the boat early, with some so exhausted they won't go out the next day. The best thing to take with you is some good hard stamina.

You might have a chance to go after a mountain goat. But that means hiking from the beach and getting far above tree level. That will take from 6 am until noon at least. And you'll have to spend a night in the grass also, I mean, at least if you want to get a mountain goat.

And take a partner. Honestly, the rifle is the last thought. Take whichever you shoot the best and fastest. In fact, the best way to go is to take ONE rifle between the two of you. ....if you get the chance to go after mountain goat.

Hope you have good weather. August is usually sunny.

Test your gear. Especially with some long hauls.

You'll chafe and blister, but better to do it before you get there.

Expect constant rain with all your gear.

I'd pick your lightest rifle. Black tails are tiny and quick.

Standard bear rules apply.

But hey, good luck! I haven't made it down to Kodiak yet, so I'm pretty jealous!
