I mailed my application and $20 check this morning for my New Hampshire non-resident carry permit. The HUGE benefit to this permit is that it will allow me to carry in Georgia (I live next door in South Carolina).

We'll see how long this takes.

My non-res permit came on printed plastic like a student ID - no signing necessary.

But, yeah - they are pretty quick. Got mine in about two weeks.

It's not quite as useful for me in Texas anymore since our AG has executed a blitz of reciprocity agreements, but Alabama is on my list because of it.

Anybody got a link to the info? I was just talking about this a few days ago with a friend. It seems though that in order to get from CT to NH I STILL have to stop just before the Mass. border. Unload and lock my weapon in the trunk of my car and then stop on the other side of the NH line and retrieve and load my weapon for carry again. Go figure.

:cuss:

hmmm. I thought that if you were going from state A to state B and had carry licences in both, if you passed through state C, you could carry.

Although now that I reread your post, I suppose MA would let you 'carry', just locked away in your trunk....

Either way, non-issue for me since I already live in MA.

280 ... the Mass Class A temporary license to carry for all lawful purposes is a heck of a lot easier to get as a non-resident than as a Mass resident! If you want to put in the $100 + rigamarole/year for the thing, you'll get it as long as you comply with all the requirements. You have to renew every year, the turnaround time is about 8 weeks so plan accordingly.

Rhode Island is easy too. But I digress. By the way, you can drive through RI carrying without a RI permit, as long as you have a permit for your home state and DON'T MAKE ANY STOPS in RI.

Thank You!

:)

The locked in trunk thing While in Mass. came from my friend who already has his NH. AND with no stops as well. That's my best info on the subject right now.

Instead of guessing about the law

"hmmm. I thought that if you were going from state A to state B and had carry licences [sic] in both, if you passed through state C, you could carry."

You thought wrong. The Firearms Owners Protection Act covers those in transit from a state in which they are legal to a state in which they are legal , so long as the firearms are secured, unloaded, in a locked container with the ammo in a separate container. It does not allow carrying in transit.

As for Rhode Island being "easy," I disagree. The RI AG is almost as anti-gun as the Mass AG, if not quite as aggressive. The RI AG has a policy of usurping local chiefs' power by directing them to have all applicants apply through the AG, despite the statute expressly stating that chiefs have the authority to issue.

It can be done, but don't expect it to necessarily be an "easy" process.

When I called New Hampshire, they told me if I have a nonresident FL permit, they would issue me a nonresident NH permit. Did they recently change their policy? My state is not shall-issue.

NH state law says they must get back to you with the permit (or reason why you were denied) within something like 2 weeks. So yeah, they should be pretty fast.

You sure about that? The back of mine says "invalid without signature." oh, crap, the ink is smeared!

NH changed their policy in October, I think. You need a permit from your home state or any other state before they'll issue a nonresident permit.

Tory beat me too it.

And this is not limited to MA. The FOPA is what allows transit THROUGH states where you don't have a license (and that aren't reciprocal with where you do have a license). Unloaded and locked is the law, not loaded and on your belt.

And for the purpose of this law, "through" means THROUGH. You can stop for gas and a burger along the turnpike, because that's in the normal course of travel, but if you detour 25 miles off the highway to have lunch with your old college roommate, then you are no longer in transit "through" that state, you have now gone to a destination IN that state and the FOPA does not apply.

I am unclear as to whether or not stopping for the night when crossing a large state like Texas is considered the normal course of travel. To my feeble brain that should still be covered, but I don't know if the law has been tested on that.

What I find funny is the NH does not recognize or honor my South Carolina resident permit; yet it appears they'll give me one of their non-resident permits.

Believe me, I'm NOT complaining.

if you apply for a NH non-res permit, new hampshire will recognize a permit to carry for fishing and hunting from your home state right?

I applied for mine on a PA Sportsman's Firearm Permit (which I assume is what you're asking about), and got it, so it's definitely worth a try.

NH NR Turn Around

From MA, I sent my NH NR App on March 30, Issued Date is April 1, Postmark was April 4, in my hands April 5th. Can't beat it!

My NH non-res CCW looks like someone printed it in their basement with an inkjet low on ink on a piece of tan construction paper. :)

I guess they updated their equipment...

Question if I may. I have the AR Resident and FL non- res.

I followed link above to PDF :
http://webster.state.nh.us/safety/nhsp/documents/dssp260.pdf

Where I noticed this question:For what reason(s) do you make application to carry a pistol in New Hampshire? (see reverse side)

What is on the reverse side? :)

Seriously - does one have to select a "valid reason"? If so what would be "valid"?

I have a 'valid reason' .

Reverse side = page 2.

"A license to carry a loaded handgun may be issued for PROTECTION or ALL PROPER PURPOSES. One or more of these reasons must be noted on the application, in the space provided for reason(s) you make application to carry a pistol in New Hampshire."

Thank You.

I did not know if more specific reasons were needed.

Such as the transport of valuables - Money, Jewelry, Diamonds, Precious Gems, Gold Coins Furs, or Bearer Bonds. If one were to be specific as to having access to a business ( opening or closing), or if acting as Security for another ( EP).
