TWeatherford,
First let me apologize if I offended you.
This medium [Internet] often makes communication difficult, as we do not have non-verbal language, tone and inflection to assist. Smilies assist - still the messages get misconstred.
Some folks know that I often reply to a more lower level than needed for the benefit of the newer folks, some that only lurk, and non members that find this site thru search engines.
Kids: Heck , though I do not have kids of my own, I often have these kids that have me as "Adopted Uncle" sit on my lap or sit next to me...
"Oh...putting shells on the sling causes that thing you said, you showed us at the range" - a little lady about so high.
Pendulum Effect.
Little Lady is referring to the picture above , she wanted me to share that with you folks.
She is a happy I did.
"Tell them how do fix the shell holder and about shooting wrong handed, and shooting fast like you do and showed..."
*ahem*
Weight of the shells on the sling will affect one's swing. Basically the balance of the gun is changed. From mounting gun to face, to getting the swing started, to follow thru. On a repeater, having to change directions, takes longer to get the gun moving in new direction.
5 shotgun shell carrier that slips over the buttstock, is what I use. Take 2 strips of Electrical tape, and going thru first and last slot, and around buttstock keeps the elastic cuff from moving upon recoil.
Caveat : if one uses any buttstock shell holder, then 1) shooting from weak side is affected, shells are going to hit face, and not allow a good cheek weld.
2) One can get a nasty cut, one must weigh the cut, vs task, and needed to shoot weak side.
Put a shell in weak hand fingers, fire, break open, fired shell pops out, insert shell from weak fingers, close action, thumb hammer back - fire again.
Same thing Dangerous Game hunters do - they keep two shells in weak fingers on two barrel DG guns.
Slings
I mostly use a sling to tote to and from where shooting. Or to have slung when / abilty to have slung when doing something else.
Toting while walking the property, hunting and all, sling is not used, nor is one used while on a range - except to show how to use one.
550 cord with slip knot, muzzle down works. Easy to slip off, put in a pocket, easy to slip back on.
I prefer a length of leather, larger pc of heavy rawhide boot lace if you will.
I have used the leather slip thru like Orvis, and LLBean show - I guess they still do.
On NEF/ H&R Toppers, well, one has to have a Phillips screw driver to remove forend. I suggest making that screw, or getting one with flat head. I believe in being as
Less Dependent on tools as can. Thin dime, flat scewdriver blade on a Swiss Army Knife, regular knife, to allow one to remove forend.
It is a rare thing to have to remove forend, still nice to know one could out in the field. Say you drop it in mud, no creek to swish out, now the ablity to remove forend to wipe out mud, so hinge is free is a good thing.
Mud in barrel, taking barrel off, and shoving stick from chamber is often easier that forcing from tight muzzle end [choke] and having all that dirt, mud going thru all the bore, and getting into action.
Barrel end : Akin to how a sling stud is affixed on a Lever Action, onto magazine, do the same onto barrel ahead of foreend. I like just a regular stud and swivel.
Then all I have to do is slip knot front first , then slip knot over pistol grip over the rear of gun.
I've adapted using leather, string, 550 cord, nylon webbing...whatever.
I mean I and others have taken rabbits , squirrels , and just used these rawhide/ 550 slings to carry game back in. Like bird carrier, just slip knot around critters leg, another slip knot add another, repeat.
Rabbits get heavy. Around the waist game pouches puts all the weight down low.
El cheapo Backpack works better, weight is up onto shoulders.
Gamer carriers - even the slip knot ones, support weight onto shoulders.
Little Lady wants me to share how I / we shared all this with the kids. Safety Rules applied of course, still we had them use their leather, and 550 cord slings to carry stuffed animals - representing critters. Little Lady had "wabbits"
Used her gun, the end of receiver , to strike a magnesium starter to make a fire.
See, Truck Guns are not a new concept. For a LOT of years, folks toted a single shot shotgun. While getting firewood,, making a barn, shed, working on getting a creek to flow water to crops, putting up fences...etc... shoot rabbits, squirrel, birds, and cook them on site. They did not have a Fast Food joint to "run down " the road too.
Little Lady wanted me toss in that as well. Since folks often ask what and how to survive if matters got bad.
See her little single shot is in a Sleeve at the moment "its cool", Just a design similar to what one can buy for a O/U and the barrel and receiver apart goes into two sleeves.
She can, and has had this thing in broad daylight, and nobody ever suspected it was a shotgun.
We have walked across a parking lot, and even taken it into a bldg where her mom works.
Folks thought this was anything from a Custom Pool Cue holder to Artist Drawing set up [ portable easle pads do work for this too].
Nope, a kid sized single shot .410, with extra shells and knife, flashight and other stuff. Heck it even fits in a backpack.
Too many years ago Beretta made a Single Shot Shotgun. 12, 20, 28 and .410.
It was designed to break down and fit in a backpack. I wish they still made these. Great guns.
Rule of 96 -
Well the 20 ga works better than a 12 ga for these single shots.
Little Lady is happy to see I shared with you folks , what I have shared with her, and my Mentors shared with me when the Earth was flat and I was a little boy.
