I've been wanting a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or 535, however after purchasing my first car, doing some repairs, and buying some fuel I have suddenly all but run out of money. So the shotgun will have to wait. I'm going to college so I wouldn't even be able to use it till next summer anyway, when I'll buy one.
But for right now I was thinking of "customizing" a single shot. I'd saw the barrel down to 18.5," saw off the (wood) stock to a pistol grip and round it, and put on some type of sling that holds extra shells. So here are my questions:
1. Recommended shotgun, new or used. Must be under $100. Maybe a NEF from Walmart? Used Mossy, Remmy, etc?
2. Can I just get a good metal blade on the chop saw and cut it down?
3. 12, 20, or 28 gauge. I don't think a .410 would be really worthwhile.
I think it would be neat to have, mainly as a truck gun (not CC) and dispatching possums and coons on the farm, and above all a playtoy.

Leave the stock alone. a pistol grip shot gun is almost useless for every day use and plays hell with all the small bones in your hand. And if you slip with the rasp and get it an 1/4 inch too short you may get to meet some new people.

Do not buy a shotgun.

Visit a range, get lessons from a person that knows how to instruct, the 4 Rules of saftey and shoot a variety of GUNS THAT FIT you.

Learn Correct Basic Fundamentals with a BONE STOCK shotgun - that FITS YOU

In the meantime get Brister's Book.

One cannot buy skill and targets.

Kinda like College - just because the Campus is Cool, Famous, "Education" is on a bldg, don't mean one is going to get educated.

Person has to get what fits and the get the basics down, be it college, shotguns, driving or having sex.

Can't buy it - gotta earn it.

C note will get a bone stock NEF Youth model in 20 ga.

Barrel is fixed modified choke, and patterns some of the best pellet patterns, and slug groups, I have seen - and I have fired a shotgun a time or two.

This gun is proven, reliable , and has choke. Not to mention, being legal in both total length of gun and barrel length.

Rule of 96 kicks into why a 20 bore instead of 12 bore. Simple, 12 ga kicks too much for weight of gun and payload.

Bigger person can shoot a smaller gun - smaller person cannot shoot a bigger gun...
Might want to teach a kid, or loan to kid or teach another shooter have to hold gun one handed to cover a situation while you dial the phone with the other...

Tack-Tickle I am not. You want Tack-Tickle, to buy skill and targets, hang fuzzy dice and curb feelers - ignore me please.

You want Practical, Common Sense, Hard-Headed Biased Opinions - read my posts.

Honest I really care about folks getting the correct basic fundamentals , safety and passing this forward.

Then again, being a Reprobate and I all, I ain't got time nor will I waste it.
I have folks that I can better spend my time and energies on.

I don't care - but when I do, I really do.

Thank you for your suggestions. They have been well taken.
I decided to do exactly what sm suggested and got a NEF 20 Gauge Youth and a box of Federal Shotshells even though a full sized 12 or 20 gauge was the same price. After shooting it a few times and feeling the stock, and reading your posts, I decided to scrap the pistol grip idea. And I think I'll leave the barrel alone.
For now, I'll put a gun sling on with a bunch of shell holders, and nock around with it. Maybe later I'll get one of these http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712&rid=&indexId=cat20811&navAction=push&navCount=1&parentType=index&parentId=cat20811&id=0031399
I guess I understand why you all responded the way you did. Guns are dangerous and not toys. And when someone goes to modifying them it gets worse. However I'm not sure why you assumed that I have no training, or the fairly clear idea that I don't understand gun safety. I've taken lessons from three different instructors on several different shotguns. I just haven't gotten one yet. I don't have the money for a nice shotgun, so I figured I could get one, do the above mods, and use it once or twice a year. However you convinced me otherwise, so thank you. I'll enjoy this gun until I can get a nice pump gun in the next few years.

I'm just guessing here but the title of your original post might have generated some of the "tone" you mention. Now. I'd take a totally different approach were I you. I'd go buy a used 12 gauge 870 express from the pawnshop for basically the same money and have a lot more utility sitting in the closet.

Too late, never mind, I need to read before I post.

You're guaranteed to quickly run afoul of federal laws governing the OAL of a shotgun by shortening the barrel to 18.5" and also cutting the stock down. Current law says it can't be shorter than 26" overall. A(n) NEF with an 18.5" barrel and pistol grip will be in the 21-22" neighborhood.

ETA: A perfectly serviceable 870 or 500 can be found in the $125 range in most pawnshops.

You might want to think a bit more before acquiring a sling that incorporates a shell holder. When you attach it to your shotgun and put shells in those loops, you've created a potentially nasty pendulum that can have potentially nasty consequences. Here's a catalog photograph of one:

If you don't gather in the front of that sling when you shoot while moving, the shells are going to swing the sling and make the shotgun harder to control. If you do gather in the front of the sling, your hands have to find and manage some bulk. And if you try to use the shells in that sling, your hand is going to have to chase them when you need them.

you're right, "heater" was the wrong word to use.
I'm not sure why everyone loves pawnshops online. I've stopped at five or six of them and all the guns they have they want way too much money for. Usually they are scratched, rusted, feel loose, and they want $200 for a Remington or Mossberg pump. I've tried to get them down, but it doesn't work.
Anyway, I still have a nice small truck gun that shoots well. It will be great if I'm ever teaching someone gun safety and how to shoot. I really like all break actions, and also on this one the fact that you have to pull the hammer back before you can fire.

TWeatherford,
First let me apologize if I offended you.
This medium [Internet] often makes communication difficult, as we do not have non-verbal language, tone and inflection to assist. Smilies assist - still the messages get misconstred.

Some folks know that I often reply to a more lower level than needed for the benefit of the newer folks, some that only lurk, and non members that find this site thru search engines.

Kids: Heck , though I do not have kids of my own, I often have these kids that have me as "Adopted Uncle" sit on my lap or sit next to me...

"Oh...putting shells on the sling causes that thing you said, you showed us at the range" - a little lady about so high.

Pendulum Effect.

Little Lady is referring to the picture above , she wanted me to share that with you folks.

She is a happy I did. :D

"Tell them how do fix the shell holder and about shooting wrong handed, and shooting fast like you do and showed..."

*ahem*

Weight of the shells on the sling will affect one's swing. Basically the balance of the gun is changed. From mounting gun to face, to getting the swing started, to follow thru. On a repeater, having to change directions, takes longer to get the gun moving in new direction.

5 shotgun shell carrier that slips over the buttstock, is what I use. Take 2 strips of Electrical tape, and going thru first and last slot, and around buttstock keeps the elastic cuff from moving upon recoil.

Caveat : if one uses any buttstock shell holder, then 1) shooting from weak side is affected, shells are going to hit face, and not allow a good cheek weld.
2) One can get a nasty cut, one must weigh the cut, vs task, and needed to shoot weak side.

Put a shell in weak hand fingers, fire, break open, fired shell pops out, insert shell from weak fingers, close action, thumb hammer back - fire again.

Same thing Dangerous Game hunters do - they keep two shells in weak fingers on two barrel DG guns.

Slings

I mostly use a sling to tote to and from where shooting. Or to have slung when / abilty to have slung when doing something else.

Toting while walking the property, hunting and all, sling is not used, nor is one used while on a range - except to show how to use one.

550 cord with slip knot, muzzle down works. Easy to slip off, put in a pocket, easy to slip back on.

I prefer a length of leather, larger pc of heavy rawhide boot lace if you will.
I have used the leather slip thru like Orvis, and LLBean show - I guess they still do.

On NEF/ H&R Toppers, well, one has to have a Phillips screw driver to remove forend. I suggest making that screw, or getting one with flat head. I believe in being as Less Dependent on tools as can. Thin dime, flat scewdriver blade on a Swiss Army Knife, regular knife, to allow one to remove forend.

It is a rare thing to have to remove forend, still nice to know one could out in the field. Say you drop it in mud, no creek to swish out, now the ablity to remove forend to wipe out mud, so hinge is free is a good thing.

Mud in barrel, taking barrel off, and shoving stick from chamber is often easier that forcing from tight muzzle end [choke] and having all that dirt, mud going thru all the bore, and getting into action.

Barrel end : Akin to how a sling stud is affixed on a Lever Action, onto magazine, do the same onto barrel ahead of foreend. I like just a regular stud and swivel.

Then all I have to do is slip knot front first , then slip knot over pistol grip over the rear of gun.

I've adapted using leather, string, 550 cord, nylon webbing...whatever.

I mean I and others have taken rabbits , squirrels , and just used these rawhide/ 550 slings to carry game back in. Like bird carrier, just slip knot around critters leg, another slip knot add another, repeat.

Rabbits get heavy. Around the waist game pouches puts all the weight down low.

El cheapo Backpack works better, weight is up onto shoulders.

Gamer carriers - even the slip knot ones, support weight onto shoulders.

Little Lady wants me to share how I / we shared all this with the kids. Safety Rules applied of course, still we had them use their leather, and 550 cord slings to carry stuffed animals - representing critters. Little Lady had "wabbits"

Used her gun, the end of receiver , to strike a magnesium starter to make a fire.

See, Truck Guns are not a new concept. For a LOT of years, folks toted a single shot shotgun. While getting firewood,, making a barn, shed, working on getting a creek to flow water to crops, putting up fences...etc... shoot rabbits, squirrel, birds, and cook them on site. They did not have a Fast Food joint to "run down " the road too.

Little Lady wanted me toss in that as well. Since folks often ask what and how to survive if matters got bad.

See her little single shot is in a Sleeve at the moment "its cool", Just a design similar to what one can buy for a O/U and the barrel and receiver apart goes into two sleeves.

She can, and has had this thing in broad daylight, and nobody ever suspected it was a shotgun.

We have walked across a parking lot, and even taken it into a bldg where her mom works.

Folks thought this was anything from a Custom Pool Cue holder to Artist Drawing set up [ portable easle pads do work for this too].

Nope, a kid sized single shot .410, with extra shells and knife, flashight and other stuff. Heck it even fits in a backpack.

Too many years ago Beretta made a Single Shot Shotgun. 12, 20, 28 and .410.

It was designed to break down and fit in a backpack. I wish they still made these. Great guns.

Rule of 96 -
Well the 20 ga works better than a 12 ga for these single shots.

Little Lady is happy to see I shared with you folks , what I have shared with her, and my Mentors shared with me when the Earth was flat and I was a little boy.

:)
