per instructions of the moderator that closed that thread...I'm opening a new one to share this: though the vast majority of handgun owners in the U.S. have hollowpoints available to them and are allowed to utilize them for defense, the citizens in New Jersey are stuck with non-hollowpoint loads;

I'm thinking that they could learn from the discussion that was closed considering that fmj is probably what a lot of them have loaded in their defensive handguns; if I was living in New Jersey, reading feedback about fmj penetration between 9mm and .45 acp would be pertenent information;

as a sidebar, I am considering wearing my 9mm handgun while doing chores at the hunting camp (which includes prepping hunting sites in the woods) and I would like to know what 9mm fmj is capable of vs hollowpoint vs hardcast cone tip leadheads to assist in finalizing my decision on what to load; thank you for your time and attention

From the book Stopping Power by Evan Marshall and Ed Sanow:
Solid point gelatin penetration tests:
45 acp 185 FMJ-FP 27.9''
9mm 115 FMJ 24.5''
9mm 147 FMJ 28.7''
45 acp 230 FMJ 30.5''
All of those would likely exit a human target with enough energy to kill a bystander.

Can you use PowRBall or EFMJ ammo? If I was absolutely limited to ball ammo, I'd carry a 44 Special with full wadcutters.

1) yes I can use jhp's
2) thought about the .44 spl semiwadcutters, but my .44 mag handgun weighs over 4 lbs when loaded and is too large for discreet carry purposes
3) as of last year in PA, hunters who have a CCW can carry a defensive sidearm, but it has to be concealed to be legal (the .44 mag is too big to conceal, especially during warmer months)
4) I am concerned with penetration due to thick hair and hides of woods critters...thus considering fmj's
