I'm looking for info on the new manufacture Ithaca defense shotguns. Are the current Ohio made guns good pieces of equipment? Do they compare favorably with the original New York guns in terms of quality? I've always wanted to add an Ithaca pump gun to my collection, and was wondering if I should buy one of the new guns, or if I should hold out and wait for the right older used model to come along.

New or used won't matter. The new Ithaca's I'VE seen have looked better than the "middle-Ithacas" or those made from around 1975 till after the Ohio company bought them out. The BEST Ithacas to my mind are the 50's models.

The new Ithacas look awesome and I think they are quite pricey. Hopefully they are better than the middle Ithacas. The seem to have excellent fit and finish and have different grades. Highly unusual for the typical American junk pump guns that have been produced lately.

The prices I've seen on the "Defense" models have actually been relatively reasonable (less than $500). No, that's not 870 Express or Mossberg 500 cheap. Then again, this is an all-steel shotgun, made the way they used to make them (except on CNC machines).I don't like that the 5-shot model has nothing connecting the mag tube to the barrel. It (the mag tube) just kind of hangs out there in the breeze. The 8-shot looks better in this regard. I've seen some new ones selling on Gunbroker.
