New Makarovs?

Surplus only, plus whatever might be old stock sitting around somewhere. We haven't been able to get new production Baikal for a while, and Arsenal just recently ceased production of new Makarovs.

<sniff!

Probably hard to imagine they will be produced again since Arsenal in Bulgaria just recently stopped making them as lee n. field notes. I've got 3 of them - an EG, Bulgarian and commercial Russian .380.

The only ones available right now are surplus.

In the last few years both Russia and Bulgaria were manufacturing new guns and importing them. That stopped several years ago. China used to also import commercial Norinco Maks, but that's been at least 10 years since those were available.

Heck, even the newly-unified Germany made up some new production commercial Maks and imported them in the mid-90's. That was a pretty small run and those are quite collectable now.

If you hunt, and are willing to pay more, you can find one of those commercial Maks on the secondary (used) market. The only things the distributers are going to have now are mil-surp.

I just picked up a used Bulgarian Mak, so I am late & new to the game. It is a nice weapon. It is the only one that I have seen in this area in at least 2 years so I had to pay the higher end for it. I now have to get to the Gun Shows so I could find a couple more cheaper ones and ammo.

Hello. My observation is that the new "Makarovs", both Bulgarian and Russian, prodused in the recent 5 - 7 years are of very low quality - very poor finish, poor parts fitting, bad metal - I have seen some bulged barrels from 2 - 3 boxes of ammo... I have seen a brand-new, unfired, "Viking" pistol (made in Izhevsk plant in Russia) that had a gap of allmost 0,03" between the locking lug of the barrel and the corresponding part of the slide when it is "in batery"...
Stick with the old, pre 1989 guns...
Best, Boris

My local shop recently had a nice, used East German for $350. Next time I visited, it was gone. Prices are only going to go up. Snap them up when you can.

This is a much better pistol, and cheaper than current Mak prices.

"much better" is certainly debatable and I think most Mak owners would disagree. It does hold more rounds than a Mak and is a fine pistol from what I've seen & heard.

Yes, the cz is a great pistol (owned the cz 83 version) but whether its "better" than the Mak is a matter of opinion (owned a Bulgy Mak, wish I had it back).
I think the Mak is probably one of the most reliable handguns ever made.

Your best bet is to check SlimTim's Mak Trader on gunboards.com or look at auction sites. The Baikal (IJ70series) have a poorer finish that the Military counterparts. At this point I own 6 Maks, 1 CZ 82, and a P64. I would disagree that the CZ82 is better than the Mak. It has it's merits, it is a good gun, but overall, the Mak is better.

What about Makarov parts?

I'm seriously contemplating getting a Makarov myself. If nobody is making them anymore does anybody still make replacement parts and or accessories for them? Though I'm buying it for a sentimental/historical value I'd still like to know that I could fix it if anything ever breaks.

A newly manufactured one- no way. Close to mint condition you might be able to find if you add for it.
It is a reliable weapon, but make sure when you buy it it works. The parts on Makarov to focus on are the safety and semi mechanism, becuase usually the ware out and either safety does not work or the pistol from time to time will shot burst fires.
