Got this rifle from my buddy.
It appears to be a 1910 Mexican Mauser, basically a small ring 98.... @troy fairweather helped me figure out what I was messing with since I'm not a Mauser guy.
Originally sporterized some time back in its history. Standard treatment for the most part.
bent bolt handle, scope mount, and high gloss sporter stock....all of which were done pretty well.
Where it diverges....
Both the crest and striper slots were ground away and It had a replacement barrel in .243 (which as we know is a fantastic cartridge and one of my least favorites).
The first stage of the trigger was taken completely out, and sear engagement was reduced to give it a reasonably creepy single-stage pull of about 4lbs.
For some reason, the firing pin was also replaced with a standard 98 firing pin which is noticeably too long.
Some original pictures.
Cute front sight ive never seen before.
Ground bridges
Premium quality scope mount!
The grinding job was pretty good, theres a slight divot just right of the....upside down scope mount holes, but otherwise its hard to tell its been altered.
The complete rifle as I received it.
98 pin, correct pin
So with this as a base I started to tinker.
Replaced the firing pin with the correct one, and added a new spring to it.
Changed the barrel to .257 Roberts, because its cool.....and i found a barrel on ebay so didnt have to wait for one......
Refinished the stock with BLO, and installed a Limbsavers recoil pad to get rid of the rounded edges on the back of the stock, and to add some much needed length. (not pictured)
Bedded the action, and bottom metal, I made epoxy pillars as well as set the bottom metal flush with the stock.
I also installed a two-position right side safety, and will be replacing the trigger with a timney drop in here in the near future.
Barrel is also in the white with a coat of cold blue, so in the near future one of my coworkers is going to come over and learn how to blast and Duracoat on this one.

Completed rifle.
With all the major work completed, and the hunt for reloading stuff over (ok it was as easy as asking @Bandit67 if he had what i needed lol), it was time to load up some rounds and go turn money into noise.
Last week I was at the range to sight some other rifles, and I took a pressure load ladder of RL-17 under 115gr Nosler Ballistic tips. Charges ran from 43-45...but being the genius that I am, I didnt label the individual rounds and mixed up the ammo carriers with my minimum and maximum charges.
That left me with just the 44gr charges to try, and those ran about 3050, and had a fairly large ES.
Group for the few I did send at the target (only had 5) was in the 2" range.
With that info in hand, I decided to back down another .5gr (pressure looked ok, but higher than I liked) and load up 20 or so just to see how well the gun would shoot with that arbitrary charge weight.
Fast forward a week or so, and dad wants to do a long range day. Thus I took the Mauser with me.
I forgot the Magneto speed today, so I dont have velocity data (but ive got some extrapolations, and im expecting about 3000-3020ish).
My first few shots were clean off the board. Id forgotten Id shimmed my scope over to the left and was not bore-sighted before taking those first couple shots. It took a few tries to get back on target and sighted, but I got it where I wanted and shot this group at about 200yds (The near bullseye in the black dot is from my S20 7 mag. Unfortunately, I was aiming at a dot about a foot above that black one).
From there my Dad and I both made hits on the 10" and 4" plates at 400yds or so, and I made a couple on the 10" at 700....I also forgot the spotting scope and tripod, so no pictures or videos of that.
Im hoping to finalize some of the minor issues, and have this gun 100% complete in the next week or two....Its already shooting fantastically, and it's a real pleasure to operate.
