Friends, my apologies for this newbie question: when I am reading the classified sections what are my options when I see a gun I am intersted in buying from someone in another state? Since I currently live in NJ ( sorry it is sort of a birth defect!) and I see offers from people in, for example, PA to do a FFT transaction - how do I do this? Do I need paperwork like when buying from my shop? Do I need to get an additional permit from my local PD? Sorry if this has been asked/answered before I did not see it referenced as it relates to laws in NJ.
Thank you.

First of all, in order to purchase a firearm from a resident of another state you'll need to have it sent to a FFL in your state, who will then transfer it to you after the relevant checks and such have been done. FTF transfers may only be conducted between residents of the same state, as per federal law.

That aside, you'll need to do a little reading on NJ law regarding firearms purchases. I'm not 100% familiar with it, but I do know that there is some permitting required before you can walk into a gunshop and take home a gun. A search on this forum should turn up plenty of info, though! :)

I'd just move to Pennsylvania.

Why do people bother to post stuff like this?

Newsflash - those of us who live in states with less than ideal 2A laws are fully aware of our situation. But guess what? Guns are generally not the only thing we have going on in our lives. Most of us have these crazy things called jobs, lives, family, and friends. You know, important stuff. Stuff that makes it pretty tough to just up and move because of one aspect of our lives that happen to be a bit tricky and frustrating.

Long story short: please don't bother with the "why don't you move already!" crap. It's not clever, or helpful. At all.

What's more, the more of us who STAY in these states, the better. If we all run, nothing changes. If more of us pro-2A types stayed and fought, it'd be a heck of a lot harder for those who would restrict our rights to do so.

Thanks all cl4de6, kingpin008, I'm just trying to learn from those of you who know more than I do on this topic. In my area of expertise I am able to help others through some very technical and dense information and I really try to keep in mind that the people I am speaking to are probably well versed in areas that might baffle me. I truely appreciative of you all taking time to respond to my question(s).

Find a local "FFL" dealer. AKA any gun shop near you, in your state. Go to them, and ask if they will accept a gun for you from another state. You would get their info, and when you buy, you give them the FFL's shipping info and credentials. They will charge a fee. Then once they have it, it would be like buying it from that shop as far as background check, or whatever NJ requires to buy in a shop. The FFL could tell you what that entails as well while you are there, if you don't know already.
Gun laws are different in different states, so you need to find the NJ laws regardiung face to face. Most states allow you to just sell it like you are selling a fishing rod(buyer not known to be a "prohibited person". Many people take license info or some sort of ID), but others require more. I'd be surprised if NJ allowed regular FTF cash transactions without permits and/or paperwork.
As an example, in CT, private handgun sales need paperwork to PD, pistol permit. Private long gun sales have no requirements other than that the buyer is not known by the seller to be a "prohibited person."

If you don't have a local shop that will handle transfers, you can use this database.

Depending on the seller, some FFL's will accept a transfer only from another FFL. This could be a consideration.

Don't feel bad about being confused. I handled permit processing for my department in NJ and with the changes, we couldn't keep up. I actually wanted to get a copy of the NJ documentation for handling firearms processing and found one hasn't been printed in about ten years.

Not totally correct,

To buy a handgun from someone in another state it has to be shipped to a FFL in your state by another FFL in the seller's state or by the seller directly to the FFL in your state as long as the FFL in your state will accept a gun from a non-FFL.

To buy a long gun from someone in another state you can follow the handgun procedure or meet the seller at a FFL in his or your state and have the transfer done there.
