I am interested in information about public land Elk Hunting in New Mexico. Anybody know any good spots? What are the regulations? I am an out of stater from Texas trying to plan a hunt for '06 season. Any help would be welcome.

Coyote,
I'm an out of stater from Louisiana wanting the same thing. I've been told that I should be planning the 07 season hunt now. I may settle for a mule deer hunt this year. Any advice?

Well, I can offer a little info, and point you to New Mexico's website:

http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/recreation/hunting/index.htm

Elk is done by lottery and zone. you pick the zone you wish to hunt on the form you send in with your check... Some specific rules apply to certain zones. It can be complicated... I'm still trying to figure some of it out, but it may change for me here soon, I'm looking at buying some acreage out there...

Generally speaking the SW 1/4 of New Mexico has the largest antlers. Further north has larger elk populations but not the trophy type.
Look at hunt units within the Gila and Cibola National Forest. Areas west of the Rio Grande all the way to Arizona, but stay south of Grants, and north of Silver City for trophy bulls.

You get 3 choices on the hunt application. The 4th choice is ANY unfilled hunt unit.

Just outside of Cloudcroft, NM is a 40 acre parcel we have been buying on a land contract from the owner/rancher. So far, 18 years of payments and two more years to go. This is where we plan to retire. Nearest grocery store is 18 miles downhill at Alamogordo.

The ridge line starts at Cloudcroft and heads north. Plenty of elk past the 2 miles-from-the-nearest-road imaginary marker. Local hunters DO NOT know about wheelbarrows or backpacks.

The Sangria de Christos range is also loaded with elk. Spanish for blood of Christ. You'll need a pack mule to get way back into the public wilderness. But elk here are not spooky. No white men have been in this area for many years except occaissional geologists and forest service timber estimators. This is good elk hunting country for iron sights and a short Winchester carbine. Long shots are quite uncommon as the animals seem mystified at the presence of a human being.

Good hunting to you.
