new model 70 or ruger 77/hawkeye

If you ever have to bed the action, the Ruger is an absolute pain. The angled forend screw and insignificant front recoil lug make the bedding job involved and difficult. A M70 is quite straight forward in this respects.

Few factory rifles don't have to be glass bedded to achieve best accuracy. I have not bedded the FN PBR pictured below it does well enough as is. In a different stock, it might need to be bedded.

I prefer the M70 to any action except a Mauser 98. The M70 is a smooth and slick action.

some nice shooting there i never had a need to bed a ruger all the ones i had shot very good much better then i can hold even on the bench. with the rugers the action screws are the main cause of bad groups once u learn to tighten them right u are good. sometimes i make the mag box so it can move when all is tight it works tanks for your reply sir

It is always difficult to pick up something where there are many good choices. Ruger, Winchester, Savage, Remington, Sauer, CZ, FN, Browning, Bergara, Howa, Tikka, Sako, Kimber, Steyr, and many others. For the most part you can't go wrong with the one that fits you best. All are capable of more than enough field accuracy. May I suggest using a "quarter" to decide?

I've never owned a Winchester 70 but always heard good things about them. The pre 64s are supposed to be better. My Son-n-law has one made in 1948 that is a beautiful rifle. Told him I'd trade, he'd have his pick of any 3 guns I owned. He refused and I don't blame him.
I've owned 3 77s. Two of which were tang safety. Being right handed I don't see any advantage of the tang over the Mauser style on the new Hawkeyes and it seems more substantial to me. I have my current Hawkeye 77 absolute zero'ed at 100 yards. I has a Leupold 3-9 X 40. Great rifle with an outstanding trigger.

I’ve never really cared for Rugers and have always liked M70’s a bunch. That being said I really like the looks of your rifle and would definitely own one.

I've had 2 M70s come and go. Beautiful well made rifles and another will join the stable in due course.

I'm a sucker for 6.5x55 & for any rifle still made with open sights. When I saw a run of these were being made, I had to have one.

Can't wait to see what cartridge they chamber them in next year.

yes so many a good today for this gun id like the mauser style. im liking the m70 better but relay needs to be a 280 rem or a 7mm i dont think win makes the sporter in 280 or the maple. i love the 708 but dont know about the shorter action i have to handle one

M70 hands down without a doubt. I looked at pretty much all the major brands, and some minor ones, when I was searching for my hunting rifle. I figured it would be my one and only so I wanted something that was well built and could handle anything I might do. I settled on the M70 Safari Express in 375 H&H.

375 H&H - are you sure that's going to be enough for whitetails? Might want to move up to something bigger...

I kid, I kid.

Nice gun.

Lol, it might not be enough. ;)

There is a member here, and for the life of me I can't remember who, that used his 375 for whitetail using either light weight bullets or cast bullets over light loads that replicated moderate 30-06 loads with great success.

I have 1 m70, 2 m77, 2 kimbers, and a 1903 sporterized. The smoothest action by far is my m70 and it's my favorite so that's what I'm reccomending.
i like kimbers if i can save that much for one. id like one in 280ai with they made the hunter one in cheap wood and not the plastic stock. are there any other rifles under 1500 with a mauser style action there is a Montana on gb for under 1000 in 7 mauser name any if you guys know of any

This does not have open sights, but it is a M70 in 6.5 X 55. Made in the mid 1990's.

I free floated the barrel and bedded the action. It shot much more consistently after that. It shoots well with IMR 4350, H4350, IMR 4831 and H4831. This cartridge "likes" those slow burning powders. Based on chronograph velocities, a 140 Hornaday SPFB with 43.0 grains IMR 4350 is a duplicate of Swedish ball ammunition.

This load was a bit slow, still shot well at 300 yards

It did not like Remington Core Lokts

It did like 140 SMK’s

Those were new cases, completely greased so they would fire form perfectly to the chamber without any case stretching. I greased the bullets as I believe the practice reduced jacket fouling, but it is hard to know without a bore scope. And they shot well.

I have the hunter in 243 and 280ai. I like the 243 better actually. The kimbers are great if your planning on backpacking or hiking and I've been very pleased with them overall. But if you don't need super light weight I still prefer the win mdl 70.

Another make with Mauser action below 1500$ is the Montana rifle company model 1999. I'd like to check out the asr SS rifle in 25-06 one day.
