I had a chance to take a couple friends to the range today. Guy and gal in their 40s. He's shot some off and on, she said she had shot a hand gun before, once or twice.
We set up in one of the outdoor three sided shooting bays. I brought a couple semi-auto 22s, he had a 22 revolver. I got them organized on safety and gun handling, then got the lady shooting my CZ 75 Kadet Kit conversion. Targets at 7 yards. Trying to get her good grip and comfortable with the gun not exploding in her face or flying out of her hands.
The guy was shooting his revolver pretty well, using the old target style 2 handed grip. Showed him a combat two hand and he went back and forth. Got him shooting my Springfield Black Stainless with the Ciener conversion. Got them to switch guns, the lady liked the 1911 trigger. I told her I replaced the factory parts with Ed Brown. She didn't know what I was talking about, but really liked the trigger.
They have an old Colt Police .38 Special, and wanted to shoot it to get comfortable for home defense. I had some really mild reloads, and we shot it a bit. The lady thought the recoil was pretty strong, so we worked on grip and on getting used to the idea that the gun wouldn't fly out of her hands.
I brought out my 19-3 with the new Ahrends grips. They both really liked the way it handled. The lady fell in love. About a hundred rounds fired by her.
She felt very comfortable with the recoil.
I brought out my new S&W 25 Classic, 6.5" Nickle, 45 Colt. I have some very mild target loads for it. The guy thought he needed to shoot it, and did. The lady was intimidated. I held her hands to insure the gun didn't fly in her face. After a cylinder or two she relaxed. She started hitting pretty well at 15 yards S/A. Her finger wasn't strong enough to run D/A even with the reduced Wolff mainspring. She started shooting at 25 yards, and hitting pretty well. I let her shoot the 25-13 Mountain Gun. She liked the 4" barrel, but really liked the big nickel gun.
I had them go back to the 22s.
Then we went to 9mm 1911 and .45 1911, my two Baers. The lady preferred the .45!
So after about 3 hours of pretty much continuous shooting they both realized that they were tired, but neither one wanted to quit. I sat back and relaxed. After clean-up and stowing the gear we toured the club. Rifle range, indoor .22 range and new office. One of our club ladies was there and talked about all the women's programs.
They were getting sign-up information and talking about which new guns they needed..........
