New/Old 28-2

A friend fell in love with the 3.5" M27 and was plotting to replace his 4" M28's barrel to get The Look.
I pointed out that he had a M28 "no dash" with police department marking and would be spending money to devalue a rather scarce revolver.
He got over it, more due to the cost than any scarcity factor.

Here is my improved Model 28-2. I rounded the grip frame, swapped cylinders and had the original barrel recut for the 45 ACP cartridge. It was and still is, a perfect companion.

Looks great, but......why not just get an M25 or 1917? Seems like a bit of bother for more or less the same thing.
No hate though, it DOES look awesome!

Is that Elk on the handle? Kinda like these?

Yes, elk magnas from Ken Driscoll. I prefer less bark or smooth if I can get it.

And I apologize for the thread drift.

Good questions.

A Model 25 has a heavier barrel than a Model 28-2. And Model 25s all came with 6.5” barrels. I did have this Model 25-2 altered a bit.

It weighs more than the custom Model 28-2, I will check my notes for the difference.

A Model 1917 is similar but the barrel is 5.5” and it has fixed sights. Here is my custom 1917. Probably the 5th or 6th one I have done. It seems other folks like them also.

That is one super cool revolver.

Thank you. It was built because a Model 1950 or Model 26 with a 4” barrel could not be found that was not POR (priced out of reach). S&W only made a few of the, dwelling on the competition angle rather than the Police angle which they had cornered with the 36 calibers K frames. I was a young Police Officer and while I liked the 45 ACP cartridge, I preferred the revolver. First one I built was on a Model 1917. RO said NO. The Model 28-2 was next and that was okay(?). I carried it for a while and then at a training seminar was told why it might be a bad idea for an Assistant Range Officer to carry something other than what was issued by the department. NUTS!

Many years after I became badgeless, S&W offered the fixed sighted Model 22-4 and the adjustable sighted Model 625-6 Mountain Gun. I would have cheerfully carried either one and a Model 22-4 is my edc.

I like the look of that shorter barrel. Glad you got it straightened out, that always feels good. That old barrel is crazy man...wow

@dickydalton that’s proof that “a Dremel Tool is a Gunsmith’s Best Friend”. The use of those things can be a money maker for gunsmiths in the hands of a novice.
