Hi All,

I'm in the mood for a new 9mm for range shooting. I currently own a CZ 75 and an XD9 (which is also my home SD gun). These are both fine at the range, but I'd like something else. I've narrowed it down to a Glock 34 and Sig 226. I was thinking of an XDM as well, but felt that one XD was enough. I could be convinced to rethink that though. I'm interested in accuracy, reliability, and durability (well, who isn't?). This gun will reside in the safe and not be carried.

Any thoughts? I know this has been discussed before, but thought I'd throw it out there again.

Thanks!

i have a G24 w/ 9mm KKM bbl and it's way more accurate than my P226.

here's my G24/9mm, G34 and G17

Interesting question. I prefer the Sig, but I'm sure the Glock would be fine, too.

You already own a double action and a striker-fired 9mm, though. Maybe change it up and buy a Browning Hi-Power so that you have a single-action range gun? Just an idea....

OP is asking which gun is GOOD for Range only gun i picked the XDM its reliable and accurate and good enough to empty magazines all day at the range and still be good enough for carry too but the OP wants us to help him pick a range only gun i choose the XDM,

i dont care much for Glocks (butt ugly) they arent my style, which is why i choose Ruger SR9 over any Glock.

i love SIGs but they are too expensive for my taste, they are the best out of the 3.

my style is

Ruger
Taurus
S&W
Kimber

For "range only" it really doesn't matter one whit.

But, given the guns you already own, the Glock fills a niche the others don't. IE; it's a Glock. The grip angle takes some getting used to for most folks. That's worth doing, if you're a serious gunner.

Also, parts availability and ease of maintenance and upgrades are supreme on the Glock.

I throw my vote to the Sig.

Primarily because I am a big fan of Sig and I can't stand the feel of Glock or the Springfield XD/XDM. Nothing wrong with them, simply personal preference. I respect them for their designed roles (especially Glock), but the feel of them in my hand and during shooting is just awful. The Sig is much better to me. I also like a heftier pistol and dislike polymer outside of carry guns. Again, just personal preference.

In terms of reliability, durability, and accuracy, I'd say the Glock and Sig are going to be excellent choices. The XDM probably will be too, but I simply don't have enough knowledge of them to say.

If you can find a place that rents them, try them out before you buy.

I also have to agree with Quack...gotta love the STI 1911 pistols. I know they aren't in your current choices, but for the future, when you have some spare cash laying around, cluttering up the place, the STI is a good way to get rid of that clutter cash. :D

Let us know which you finally decide on and post a few pics.

Thanks for the replies. The STI and Springfield 1911s are very nice, but this purchase is going to be under $700.

Leaning toward the Glock - local guy has one for $580, NIB, w/3 mags. Seems like a good deal.

from the research i've done before buying my 9mm, i would say get the Sig. only reason i didnt get the 226 was its out of my budget. if its going to be a safe gun and used occasional and not as a carry weapon i would still say Sig.
plus they look cool :)

You already have two pistols better than the glock, the CZ and the XD.

:D

You didn't list any pistols better than the CZ........... :(

For $700 or less why not get a wheel gun? :D

+1 for the Sig. I have a P220 Equinox .45 ACP and though it packs a wallop, it's very accurate, looks refined and feels right in the hand. Granted I've only been able to compare it to my Glock 27 and Makarov. There's just something about the Sig.

the p226 and glock 34 are both fantastic guns, I'd call them dead even, however if its for range only you may want to look at the glock 17L, its got a longer barrel and from what I hear can pull 2" groups at 50 yards easier then most emi auto's.

its worth a look

What about a Glock 35? You could slap in a 9mm barrel shoot all day and then put back in the original .40 barrel and keep it for defense.

Well, I found a Sig 226R w/night sights NIB for $690 at a local shop. There are a couple similarly priced up for auction. If I can somehow get otd for under $700 for the Sig (w/night sights - this gun retails for $1075), that'd probably be my choice. The Glock 34, which I was leaning toward, can be had for $100-150 less.

I'm sticking to 9mm because that's what I'm reloading. I'm pretty comfortable with the XD 9mm for SD purposes, although the .40 barrel swap idea is intriguing.

Of your choices I'd have to go with a SIG. I had a Glock 34 and while it was a great shooting gun it just doesn't compare to my West German made 226. Look around for an older German made 226 in the classified section on sigforum. Chances are you can find one for quite a bit less than your $700 limit.

or how about a 9mm 1911/2011 :D

Where did you get the part on the bottom of the grip? May I ask what it is called. Is it part of the magazine? It looks like just the ticket to keep the rough edges at the base of the grip from digging into my hand while shooting.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I had to ask.....

My vote is for the Glock, mine are much more accurate than I am!

For a range gun, the Sig. Nicer SA trigger, lower felt recoil, better practical accuracy, one of the best grips ever on a double stack 9mm.
The Glock can be mastered for sure, but I had to shoot it regularly to maintain good accuracy. The Sig I could pick up after a month or two of not shooting it and be accurate right away.
With Glocks I had better luck in the accuracy department with the large frame 20 and 21.

G34 or G17L all the way. Love my G34... it shoots like a Cadillac drives. I also have a P226 that I love. However, I consider it more of a defensive weapon than a range toy.

I'll just keep whispering, "single action trigger. Single action trigger....."
Maybe it'll work, lol. But seriously, for target work at a range, you'll love a crisp single action trigger. And it won't be more of the same that you already own.
single action trigger......

OK, how about the 226 in single action? lol.

let us know what you get.

local guy has one for $580, NIB, w/3 mags. Seems like a good deal.

Wave $550 under his nose and I'll bet he'll take it.

I presume the mags are all full capacity...

Wow, look at the neck-and-neck race between the Glock and the Sig! I obviously can't go wrong with either one.

This may end up waiting a week or two though. I just bought five AKs and 2500 rounds for $2500. Woops! :)

Glock is easier to shoot well, the DA Sig takes longer, if that matters.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...you can't just say "I bought 5 AKs" like that out of the blue and not post any pictures! ;) Lets see that arsenal :D

I love the "woops"...like it was an accident. I've had a few "accidents" like that as well...my check book was in traction for a while after each of them. :p
