New Remington 870 - Some Questions

you assume im not familiar with shooting the 870? im just not familiar with gutting one.. and the only modification i intend to make right now is a short barrel for home defense, keeping the long one for hunting purposes.. and an ATI fixed stock with pistol grip... one reason being the angle of the stock allows the shotgun to sit higher, which im certain will be more comfortable for me as i would not have to bend my head so far to the side to line up the sights (i have a big head.. so my neck gets sore easily)... other than that im looking to put the excess of my money into a new project.. i might be buying an old beat up marlin 30-30 lever action.. blueing is maybe 10% on it.. some surface corrosion.. itll need a full restoration

Given the choice of a pistol gripped ATI stock as a cure for the described fit issues - yes, I presume that. That's not to say that you haven't shot it, or don't know its manual of arms - I'm sure you have and do. I just presume that you haven't shot it enough to become 'as one' with it, and that's the point I'm trying to make.

Don't take it personally - it's just an opinion from some cranky old schmuck somewhere out there on the Internet. :) You are more than welcome to make any changes to your shotgun that you want; it's your shotgun and your money. I am just offering advice.

If you think that these mods will make you more proficient with it and make it more comfortable to shoot, then by all means make them. Please be sure to give us an update after you've burned a couple thousand rounds through it - it's always good to hear how gun mods stand up to real use.

the only mod im looking to do now is a shorter barrel for home defense, and the ATI stock which has a steeper angle to it so the shotgun itself will rest higher when rested on the shoulder.. im not going to add a tube mag extension, and i never cared for side saddles or quad rail anythings... (if i were to ever add an accessory like a flashlight... why not just get one that clamps under the barrel).. i like the simple, more tubular ribbed forearms you can get for like $20
