New revolver - Taurus 605 (.357 Mag)

Went to the gun shop - wanted a smallish, easy to conceal, revolver.

Looked at a Ruger SP101 in .357 Mag, but decided on a Taurus 605 (.357 Mag). See link below to see the gun:

This is my first Taurus, I've always been a Ruger or Springfield man, so I hope this isn't a mistake. I'll give a range report later.

Payed $357 for it. What sold me were two things. (1) it was a fair amount less expensive than the SP101 and (2) it has a life-time warranty. The warranty even follows it if I were to sell it. and the guy I sold it to sells, it, etc. It is always warrantied for life. I figure to have that kind of warranty it must be pretty good.

If it pans out, I'll probably get a Crimson Trace for it.

I just ordered a SmartCarry holster for it - it's a first for this kind of holster, too, Hope I don't shoot Willie off.

This is not a bash on Taurus, only some facts.
Yes Taurus has a life time warranty but so does Ruger. With Taurus you are lucky to get your gun back in 3 to 4 months and then you have to hope the repaired it correctly. Most of the times there's only a 2 week turnaround time with Ruger and they do things right.

Taurus is a South American company while Ruger is made in the USA. You can talk to someone at Ruger about your problems IF you have problems with their product. Try that with Taurus, good luck!

I can go on but that would sound like a bashing instead of answering only what you mentioned. I have a feeling the salesman pushed the Taurus product because his profit margin is higher on the Taurus product or he has a lot of Taurus revolver in stock he can't get rid of. Don't get me wrong, Taurus has gotten better over the years but they are NOT Ruger by any means...

I own the very same Taurus. I love it, it is accurate, great for CCW, and fun to shoot at the range. A couple of things I would recommend:

1. Read the manual carefully, particularly the section on correct ammo to use. Yes, it is rated for .357MAG but there are limitations. Using the wrong load will cause scars and chips on the drum. I mostly shoot .38SP out of mine at the range

2. Do a search in this forum. I hope you will not need to send this baby to the factory for repair, but it sounds like it can be difficult dealing with Taurus. My only experience was a call to customer service for a quick and simple question, the call took about 20 minutes, 15 of which was wait time for someone to talk to. Also, their website information is not totally accurate (at least for what my question was).

Otherwise, enjoy it. I know I do mine.

I carry the same pistol in a pocket holster. It's never given me any grief.. finish is holding up just fine.. no complaints.

I will, however, advise that you hold on really tight if you shoot any 357's. :what:

ArchAngelCD,

At my local gun shop, I went in and told the owner I wanted to buy a small revolver in .357. I told him I was interested in the SP101, and he showed me one. And then he showed me the Taurus 605. It was $100 less and has a lifetime warranty. He said he had not had any returned, or else he wouldn't be recommending it. BTW, I used the money I saved and ordered a CT LG-185 laser sight for it last night from the Internet.

I also figured he was doing me right in that he was recommending a gun that would have made him less money with the sale. I figured, if he was just a gun salesman, he would have sold me the higher dollar SP101 and would not have shown me the 605 at all. So, I feel good about the purchase - time will tell.

Hopefully Taurus guns have improved over the years - that's the feeling I get.

I have the model 650, which is the same gun as yours but with a concealed hammer, and I love mine. It feels and shoots better to me than my one son's Ruger SP-101 or my other son's S&W 640. I did send it back to Taurus shortly after I bought it for a timing adjustment, but now I think maybe I had over-exaggerated the problem.

Fact......Ruger doesn't give a warranty. They generally service their guns but don't have a written warranty.
Fact....Many Taurus owners have gotten their guns back in less than 3 or 4 months and the problems were corrected.
I see you said most of the time for a Ruger repair as I have heard of repairs going on for several months. Also Rugers have been sent back to the factory several times to correct a problem. Be careful of what you list as facts.

Just my experience, but I got mine back in two weeks.

Price of the gun is not the same as profit margin.

Majic,
I know Ruger doesn't have a written warranty yet they so have one of the best if not best Service Departments in the gun industry. I wrote what I know to be true from first hand experiance so there's no reason for you to write the word "fact" several times. Also, there's no place here for warning me what I should write about. When someone asks a question I'll continue to relate what I know to be true from what has happened to me in the past.

ArchAngelCD, I appreciate your candor. I hope everyone knows that all replies are based on experience. Majik did come on a little strong. But I reckon facts are facts and experiences are experiences.

I knew that Ruger had no written warranty, but they have always treated me as if they did. I sent my SBH .44 Mag back to them because the cylinder wouldn't advance when I tried to pull back the hammer. They fixed it - no charge - but it did take them about 2.5 months to get it back to me. No problem though - I knew it would be right and it's great. I paid to ship it, and WOW, that was expensive, never should have told UPS what was in the box, but after looking back I kinda think Ruger would have sent me a prepaid shipping label if I'd just asked. I say this because when I sent back my LCP to get the better slide release they did.

I am going to return my little LCP a second time for the recall and they're gonna give me a free extended mag for doing so. They're also going to send me a box, pre-paid, to send it to them in. Can't beat that.

Oh, I may have already told you this, but I am going back today back to buy the SP 101 in 2.25 inch barrel - and if they don't have it, I'll order it. I'll plan to keep the Taurus 605 in the bedroom and the Ruger 101 by my computer desk.

That Ruger SP 101 looked awfully nice and has had such positive things said about it - I won't be happy til I get it. And then, I can compare the two revolvers in a range report.

hack,

I bought my 605 a couple of years ago (blued 3") and love it. It is my primary CCW. I lost the factory rubber grips and put some retro Taurus oversized walnut grips on it.

I have found it to be very accurate, for a small frame, fixed sight, DA revolver. It seems to prefer 158 gr JHP and shoots to POA at 7 yards with those.

I have put ~2,000 rounds through it with zero problems. The DA (I only shoot it DA) trigger is still a bit heavy, but smooth. The cylinder indexes about 1/4" before the hammer falls, so I stage the trigger, which gives me good accuracy.

That hasn't been my experience. It took longer than that to get my P85 back from the Ruger re-call. I also sent a Blackhawk (Old Model) to them in 2000, for conversion. They wouldn't issue a shipping ticket, and it took six weeks to get it back.

My experience in Taurus was from shooting a Model 85CH loose with +P and +P+. I explained that to the desk help. They sent a shipping ticket to me, and re-built the gun, free, in six weeks.

Neither company has been hard for me to deal with. I own in excess of 20 Rugers, and a dozen Taurus. A grand total of 2 Rugers, and 1 Taurus have needed factory help. :)

Just be careful about dry firing. My 605 broke after doing this, the spring that returns the firing pin back into the frame stopped working. No idea if this is unique to Taurus or just a problem with revolvers with frame mounted firing pins though.

Other wise, congrats on your new purchase(s) :) I traded my 605 for a SP101 so I think you'll be happy with both
