I had been wanting to buy an AK ever since i got home from A-stan having witnessed the deadly effectivness of this weapon first hand. Now for some reason there seems to be a big confusion for most people when buying thier first AK, and I am no exception. The reason for this is all this internet mumbo jumbo telling horror stories for about every AK there is. People will always tell others of there misfortunes with a product before they will take the time to write about a good experience. I thought about buying the wasr 10/63 which probably would have been fine but I decided to fork out the money for an Arsenal SGL21-61. I am aware that some would say that it is stupid to do this when you can get something like a Krebs or Red Jacket. I was drawn to the Arsenal because it is mainly an entirely Russian made AK built at Izhmash. This is very cool for me because my father was born in Russia and lived there most of his life, I also have many friends from Belarus.
Well I recieved the new Arsenal about a week ago and it cost me $820 including shipping and tax. The rifle seems to be built like a tank and there appears to be no problems like canted sights. I how ever did have a personal problem with the black plastic furniture, In my opinion it looks and feels like crap. So I pursued some wooden furniture for my new AK. I wanted the russian red look. I was not comfortable spending around $120 for the russian red stock set at atlantic arms or the ironwood designs. So I bought a beat to crap surplus stock set from the 70's for $25, and a hogue pistol grip. I decided to refinish the stock my self. It took around 3 days to complete with stripping, sanding, staining, and clear coating. I think it turned out pretty good. You can decide what you think from the pics.
I ordered six surplus Soviet 30rd mags and went to town to get ammo, Gander Mountain had zero ammo for 7.62x39mm and Mc Sports and Dicks were also sold out. I was told that ever since Tuscon people went on a buyng frenzy and wipped out there shelves. So I had to buy the expensive brass cased ammo from my FFL. 180 rounds for $100 bucks.
I absolutly love this rifle, I prefer it to the AR-15 that I built to be exactly like the M16A4 that I carried everyday A-stan. Man if the GySgt heard me say that he would have my head on a stake . Well anyway tell me what you think of my new rifle, Thanks
