Rifle is going back issue is being resolved. I want to thank members here for the advice and input. I just was needing info on the significance of this, next steps and you guys helped.

I have an 1892 St. Ettienne 8mm Lebel that the bore looked exactly like that when I got it.
I was sure the bore was toast. As it turned out, it was just waaaay old cosmoline. a week of soaking and scrubbing and the bore looks brand new.
It should look new. It was a french rifle that was only fired twice... and now you know the rest of the story
