I picked up my new Ruger SP101 with a 2 1/4" barrel.
This past weekend we made our first trip to the indoor range.
The Ruger performed well. Fit and finish it not quite equal to a Smith
and Wesson. But the gun feels like a solid workhorse. Balance is
wonderful. It begs to be slipped into a concealment hoster.
Going hot with it was too much fun. It was so nice to experience a gun
with which I could hammer rounds into the center ring right out of the box. I
picked it up fast and it felt at home in my hand.
Groups with .38 special were nice and tight at center mass. I did not measure the size of the groups but I was happy to see the bullet holes clustering tight enough to become one big hole.
Head shots were easy even at 15 yards. It shot high with .357 but I suspect that had more to do with my familiarity with the gun than the firearm itself.
As with my .45 I believe that the groups will tighten even more as I
become used to the sights and feel of this little snarling pitbull of a
gun.
As for recoil, the gun was damn pleasant with .38 specials.
Shooting .357 was not abusive, but it was handful and not something I
think I want to do a lot of in one sitting. Then again, I find .357 to be a physically tiring round out of any gun.
The only complaint I have about the gun is that the edge above the
trigger guard is a little sharp and tends to slice into my trigger
finger if I am not careful about how I engage the trigger. But this is something that is easily fixed and is hardly a big complaint in light of having a nicely balanced, reliable sidearm.
After about 100 rounds I am very pleased with my latest addition to the family.
