I understand there is a relatively new Russian cartridge, the 9x39. Supposedly it's a necked up 7.62x39, developed because they were dissatisfied with terminal performance/penetration of the 7.62x39. Apparently it's subsonic and works well in silenced rifles.

The 9x39 is far from new and has nothing to do with worries about terminal performance. It was about creating a round dedicated for suppressed use. Similar in concept to the .300 Blk (take a common round and make it larger/heavy/slow) but earlier by several decades (and of course a Russian parent cartridge).

The only thing new about it is that some companies are talking about importing the round to the US - but they've been talking about it for several years and I'm not sure if they ever decided to actually bring it over.

It's a pretty cool round and would be a fun option for a dedicated suppressed rifle. I know of some people who were making a wildcat based on the 9x39 because it was very difficult to get any real 9x39 in the US, but I'm not sure where the project went.

It was originally developed for the AS VAL if I remember correctly. There weren't many guns made and ammo isn't exactly plentiful. Either way it's certainly not new nor is it likely to be coming to a dealer near you anytime in the near or distant future.
