Here is my new Smith and Wesson 686-1. I have a Ruger Security Six and a SP101...and have always wanted to get a S&W revolver. About a year ago I walked away from a 586 at a local gun shop...and have kicked my self since. Found this at Yankee Artifacts and they listed it as LNIB...the pics are from their site...still waiting for it to ship.

This money was supposed to go towards a new AR15...but I could not pass this up...the AR will always be there.

Great looking pistol. I have the pre dash 6" and I really enjoy it. Good call, it seems AR's are even getting more abundant.

Great gun - one of those (relatively few) that should be in everyone's collection.

You may not be aware, so . . . the no-dash and -1 586s and 686s were subject to a recall due to problems with primer cup extrusion into the firing pin/bushing area with certain hot loads, resulting in binding of the cylinder, making the gun inoperable. If yours has been sent in for the modification, it will have an "M" stamped somewhere in the yoke cutout area, near the model number. If it hasn't been modified you may want to contact S&W - I'm pretty sure you can still have it corrected at no cost. This is a problem that only cropped up infrequently with certain loads, so if you're using it exclusively as a range gun you may not want to bother with it.

And you're right, ARs will always be around while good 686s are starting to disappear.

Yep, was going to ask you if it has the modification but DickM beat me to it. I did not know about the recall until after I bought my 686-1, but luckily it had already been sent back to S&W by a previous owner to have the modification done.

Awesome.

I foolishly traded away a 4" 686 no dash. I look back and ask myself what in the heck was I thinking.

I did finally pick up a 4" 586-3. Great shooting guns. Congrats.

Thanks for the comments. I forgot to include that this 686 had been sent back...it has the M stamped above the model number.

I paid $450 for the gun...and from what I can find...not too bad of a price. The box is original to the gun and looks like in good shape. Box came with all of the original papers and such.

Once I buy a gun...I keep it. This will go to my son (now six years old)...along with my Rugers. So one day...he will get a nice collection. Who knows...maybe I will have one or two more S&W's to hand down to him.

Really good folks at Yankee Artifacts...Phil is great to work with. This is my first purchase from them...but I have called on other guns and they are always very pleasant and helpful. Phil did tell me that they got this 686-1 from the original owner...who was unfortunately dying from cancer. They went to his home to get the revolver. I have this man in my thoughts and prayers...

As an FYI, i sent mine in to Smith and they handled it top notch, sent me a prepaid shipping lable to get it there, and took care of the priority shipping back. Only took about 10 days if I recall.
