New S&W, need grips

I really lucked into an unfired S&W model 28-2 6", just brought it home last night. I traded an old wingmaster even up for it and I think I did well. I had 2 870s so it was no real loss.

I can't wait for the weekend to finally shoot it, I've been without a revolver for a few months now. The only problem I can find with it are the grips. I don't know their designation, but they are too small for my rather large paws. They perfectly fit the contours of the grip frame leaving the front and back straps exposed. I've thought about getting one of the Tyler T-grips but I'd really rather have a set of sturdy comfortable grips for the range. I've tried a Hogue finger groove rubber grip on a Ruger GP and they felt a little small. Are their non FG grips any larger? What about one of the Pachmayr grips, any others out there?

The Pachmayr Gripper is a little bigger than the Houges and fit larger hands somewhat better. You really need to try before you buy to make sure you get a good fit.

Sounds like you've got a set of Magna grips on it now. They do work well with a Tyler T-Grip adapter and look rather styly too.
For shooting my 28-2, I really like the S&W Target grip. The scale is just right with the N frame and it feels great in the hand.
Shooting .38s out of this big baby is a dream.
If you don't want to go to the expense of buying S&W Targets, check the CDNN website. They have walnut Targets by Sile for about $8. The shipping is more than the grips.
I got a set, stripped off the lacquer finish and used walnut stain, oil and carnuba wax to finish them and they came out looking great.

I'm going to shoot it sunday with the magna grips, see what they feel like with an assortment of ammo. The gunshow is in town next weekend, see what I see. The Pachmayr gripper looks good.

The Jordan Trooper looks like my style if I feel like dropping some cash. I was also thiinking about some El Paso Saddelry leather.

Factory Combat grips for the-N-sq. frame

I have Factory Combat grip's on most of my S&W Revolver's. They are the Hardest frame configuration to be found, but at times seen on Flea-Bay and will often exceed the $125.00 mark if they are in good shape ! I hang onto any factory Combat grip's I run across as they seem to be getting much harder to find and are the best I have found for serious target work.I have a smaller hand so I modify the factory target combat's by making the finger grooves deeper and refinishing them. {See pictures} Of a recent set I did for my model 57 Nickel revolver. I also lower the profile thickness to accomadate a custom fit that works well with my smaller hand and they still look original to me when done. Hammerddown.

That is a purty Model 28!

A Tyler T will give it that old school flavor, and retains the original grips as well. Keep the original grips anyway, they are numbered to the gun. Your grips are indeed magnas.

A Hogue Monogrip is usually my grip choice for a "shootin'" gun. That does not mean one will fit you though. I would advise testing the feel of a couple of them on display guns in a shop. The palmswell on the Hogue locks it into your hand.

Pachmayrs have always been a disappointment to me, though your results may be different.

For me, S&W targets tend to create a situation where my hand creeps up on the grip in continuous firing. The targets seem to be wider at the base than the top, making this problem occur. I do not like that.

I would really advise a couple of range sessions prior to a grip swap. Then take a look at CDNN. Be aware CDNN's shipping is $10, no matter what, so order enough to make it worthwhile!

If I remember, there are also a couple of grip makers and a big grips only dealer like 10 tables long. He has Hogue and Pachmayr as far as the eye can see. I will test for feel before I buy.

Does the T-grip require drilling a hole to attach one?(Nevermind, I just read down the page on thier website.) I haven't ruled it out yet, but not really leaning that way either.

The dang expensive Herretts have to be the best looking, don't they? I think that's the idea. I like the skip checkered 1911 grips too.

Instalation of a Tyler-T-grip

No, They use a metal tab. One important thing they do not tell you though.. is Often the instalation of one of there grip adapters will cause a scratch on the bluing or Nickel finish when installed, that can not be removed and only covered with larger style target style grips after removing one, I watch carefuly when buying a used gun to make sure a prior owner has not done this when installing one as well, which takes away a guns value to me... The Jordan Troopers are going for $105 (Yankee money). You bought this revolver for somewhere in the area of $210 green? Lord love a duck, man! You saved enough on the revolver to buy the grips and still be ahead!

That revolver is worth the expense of decent grips. You'll just waste the money on food or electricity anyway.

By the way, buying cheap grips is like buying cheap underwear; you think they're all the same, but after you wear them a couple times, you get the idea.

I traded an old wingmaster that I had @$200 in for the S&W. I'm getting the same feeling, nice grips and nice leather and I'd just about be reaching the value of the revolver.

I fired off a small bit of various ammo with the magna grips. They let your hand sit up high and reduce the felt muzzle flip. That's about all I can say good other'n their looks, I'll leave it at that. Gotta have some new grips. YMMV.

Well, I got to the funshow today and looked around. One guy had Ajax knock-offs for $50+. They felt good but very high gloss and a little slick. Hogues are too small, I think it's the finger grooves. If I could get one with the FGs filled in, that may be perfect.

I got to talking to a greybeard with an impressive old revolver collection for sale. After getting around to what I was after he reached under the table and fished out a set of Pachmayr presentation grips. I gripped them, they felt very comfortable if a little narrow. They remind me of the feel of the factory grips on a Ruger GP. They were worth $10 to me. Now on the gun they seem very nice and I'll shoot with them next week. No Herretts yet, I'll have to build up to them.
