I took another new shooter to the range today ( I average 4-5 per month.) She is a little thing, 5'2" 100 pounds. She was a bit scared about the whole experience, but wanted to learn.
I started, at her home, with a 30-40 minute safety lesson. I showed, with a deprimed case, what basic brass looked looked like. I then showed her a primed case, then a loaded round.
We then went to loading, and unloading ( ONLY wheel guns, easier for a novice to learn on.) We went to stance, and trigger control. I then got out a few wheel guns I have with Crimson Trace lasers, they were a BIG hit.
At the range I gave her ear plugs, AND headgear. We started with a Ruger GP100, then a S&W 64, SP101, S&W 60, and finally a S&W 340PD.
She liked everything but the 340PD. Even though we used the same ammo, 125gr JHP, the 340PD was a bit hard on her hand. I only teach using silouette targets, builds more confidence in a new shooter than a B2 target.
At lunch she said " I thought it would be a lot louder, and kick a lot more, but I really liked hitting the target." That is why I use DOUBLE ear protection, and start the new shooters with the biggest wheel gun I have, slowly working down to the light weights.
PLEASE introduce some new shooters to our sport. Family, friends, neighbors, co-workers. Thanks!
