I just bought a Norinco N870 Remington 14" 12 Gauge Shotgun. But I kind of think the barrel is too short, But I wanted to know what other people thought about it so leave some opinions please. Thanks :D

Yep, too short !!!! Registration and a $200 tax for legal as is
Might consider replace the barrel with an 18" and save some bucks.:D

Daneto,

That is not legal in the US without a 200 dollar tax:eek: . If not in the US, go have fun with it and be sure to post pics!:)

HEhe

I live in canada so no $200 tax! :D Feel soo lucky :neener: And where do you think I could get a Replacement Barrel?

Because it's made in China.

RIDE, that's not the reason.

US laws mandate shotgun barrels to be a minimum of 18" long. This is typically measured by inserting a wooden dowel down the barrel until it hits the breechface and taking this measurement.

To legally possess a shotgun barrel under this length, it must be duly registered with the BATF and a $200 tax stamp purchased.

Not all states allow possession even then.

Without valid tax stamp, is considered possession of short-barreled shotgun (ie. sawn-off shotgun) = jailtime.

This is a U.S. law, he said he's in Canada, I don't know what the laws in Canada say about SBS or AOW's.

I put this in your other "New Shotgun" thread as well...

Possession of your gun constitutes a felony in either Canada or the US.

http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/factsheets/r&p_e.asp

Note this paragraph describing restricted firearms:

a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make the barrel length less than 457 mm (18 inches) where the overall firearm length is 660 mm (26 inches) or more;

You should immediately remove and legally get rid of that short barrel, and replace it with an 18.5" one. And make sure the overall length is greater than 26".

I would do it just after reading this post.

I don't know if the mere posession of a short shotgun barrel that is not mounted to a shotgun is illegal or not, but I would not take the chance. Jail time for possession of a metal tube that is four inches shorter than the government likes is not worth it. I would probably cut the barrel in such a way as to render it useless, and then chuck it in the trash.

You may also have issues depending on how you obtained this gun, and from whom.

Good luck.

It was not altered. It comes from the factory in this condition. It is restricted(per being less than 18.5 inches) but not prohibited in Canada. It is not illegal in the US either, as long as all the paperwork ducks are in their rows.

As Feanaro said, a 14" inch barrel on a shotgun is perfectly legal in Canada as long as it came from the factory like that. Yeah I know, our laws are strange. I'm thinking of picking up one of those 14" Norincos also. I've heard allot of good reviews about them from guys who have them and all of the parts are 100% compatible with the Remington 870 parts.
