well.. another impulse buy... You know the story walk into a gunshop not meaning to buy anything and you leave with a gun ...
Aaannyway
I left with one, 400+ tax
Its a 20 GA 28 inch barrel, pretty good condition, clean with only 1-2 scratches on the stock, no dings.
But i have a few questions...
1. i can tell this is an old remington, metal trigger guard, nice bluing... serial no: m4578**X whats the approximate date on this?
2. how do you take it down? barrel off bolt out etc
pictures to come... I tried tonight, took about 50 all came out crappy..

Thanks, Brian.

Congrats. I just bought 3 myself; another 12 gauge in magnum trim, a 28 gauge, and a 20 gauge youth model to start my stepson shooting shotguns. The 12 and the 28 are both first generation pressed checkering pattern, because that's what I prefer.
To take it down, pull the bolt open and make sure it latches back. Unscrew the magazine cap. If it is stuck, try smacking the butt of the gun on something firm a couple of times, but if you don't have a recoil pad, don't break the butt plate. You don't need to smack it on a sidewalk. After the magazine cap is off, slide the forearm forward and off, then the barrel should slide right out the front of the action.
Enjoy.

thank you... the mag cap was pretty easy to get off when i got home, thats the first thing i did (Im still used to mossbergs)

another question... The gun only holds 2 in the tube... this will not be my hunting gun so no need
in the tube is about 4 inches of dead space
heres a picture

what is that little metal disc? can it be removed? or am i stuck with 2+1

You can CAREFULLY remove that little metal disc by prying it out, but remember the magazine spring is pushing on it just dying to go flying. Pry it up on one side, then the other, until it pops free.

While your in there clean and lightly lube the mag tube and spring.
Watch out for the spring as they can launch themselves twenty feet! :uhoh:
been there and done that!.:what::eek::banghead::cuss:

If your gun only holds 2 in the magazine, you should be able to see the plug thru the hole in the spring retainer. It is possible someone used the old pencil trick. Try tipping the gun barrel down and see if the "plug" falls out thru the hole. If not, someone put the plug in incorrectly. It should be at the front of the spring, not the back.
I just looked at your pic again. Is that retainer pushed way down inside the tube? The retainer should be flush with the end of the tube, just under the magazine cap.

Then the former post is correct! The spring retainer has been pushed down into the mag tube (maybe intentionally) Clean and reinstall it flush with the cap. Your magazine capacity should be back to normal. This assuming that the spring was not shortened before you owned the gun.

I have known a few people who did this very thing to make their gun only hold 3 rounds. For a time that was all that was allowed around here for certain game.

Good Luck!

I had a friend that did this, although not 4" deep, accidently. I forget what size all thread rod screwed right into the hole. He sprayed a little Rem Oil and pulled it back out. Good luck.

Look around the outside of the magazine tube to make sure there isnt an indention or stake mark to limit travel of the spring retainer. That could be preventing you from moving it further.

Thanks, Ill try that

There isnt one... I checked before i started prying away
I wish the previous owner knew about a simple dowel at the time

You'll have to insert a dowel from the REAR of the magazine and rap it out to the front. May I suggest a simple broom handle? You'll probably have to take the trigger group and perhaps the stock off. The other option is to put two 'Snap-Caps' into the magazine and rap them with the end of the broom stick. Won't have to disassemble it then. The plug you see is held there under spring tension. Should gradually come out. Put the end of the mag tube against the carpet or a board to keep the plug from flying out till you want it to.

I finally got around to getting to home depot, bought a 7/16's threaded rod, happened to be a little small, so i pulled it to the side then out... worked great

If this happens to any of you, you need a 1/2 threaded rod.
thanks virginian
