I just invested some Christmas money and a bonus in a SW1911. This is my first venture into the 1911 realm. I usually shoot 9mm and buy the famous Wally World white box ammo that is so cheap. Is there an equivalent in 45ACP? Any recommendations on breaking it in and a defensive load.

Dreaded CA is making me wait ten days before I get my new toy in my hands.

Thanks.

Unlike other 1911's the Smith does not seem to need a break in period. The second mag I fired through mine I mixed with hollow points and fmj and from 4 brands and it shot them all with now problem. For a defence load I use federal hydroshocks.

Hello!

I don't want to be the one that has to bust your bubble;
but I will pass on a tad bit of information I picked up on
while reading another forum. Being interested in this
firearm myself, til' I found out that S&W has already
issued a factory recall on some SW 1911's.

exert from the Smith & Wesson factory-

"In a small number of cases, its been reported that the
firing pin safety plunger on the
S&W1911 can become disabled; creating a very
dangerous situation where the slide may jam, and
render the firearm inoperable".

Status now is "Unknown"? Number of weapons with
that potential problem HAS NOT been revealed; but
the problem has been addressed.

Best Wishes,

Thanks for the info on the recall. I am aware of it and the gun is well beyond the recall range. Nonetheless, unlike the Glock situation it seems S&W handle the situation well.

There is no mag disconnect on the SW1911 to my knowledge.

Thanks for the load info.

SigLaw.

Congrats on the new pistol.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine.

Quality gun at a bargin price. True value!!

Good Luck...

(Quote) A thousand bucks is a bargain price?

A grand wouldn't be a good price at all- I got mine for $635.00...

:p

They're website seems to list it a bit higher.

SW1911

I'm completely disappointed becasue here in MA, it's the only 1911 model on "the list", and I can't swing $960 on a pistol, even if it's my favorite one.

Down here in NC they are running about $629 before tax and tags. Love this gun.

FYI, I spoke to a Smith rep about the recall. Mine was in the SN range, but already sent back and fixed. There is an SP stamped on the side of the box, and a small pin punch on the underside of the slide, near the rear.

In CA, I bought mine for $679 before taxes and fees, not bad at all considering the hassle of buying from out of state. The web sites I looked at had prices which were generally in the range of $650-700.

jamz, No one pays retail. I paid $660 for mine last spring. Prices seem to have come down a bit since then.

pesticidal, That's an NPC grip mount and it works great. I didn't want to drill and tap for a conventional mount, so this offered a nice compromise. Got mine from www.brownells.com I do have to check the tightness of the grip screws every 100 rounds or so. I take the mount on and off a lot, so I don't even LocTite.

I predict you're gonna love this gun when you get it. I bought one ($680 NIB) a few monthes back. It is also my first 1911 so I can't compare to anything else. Mine has been 100% reliable, not a single hiccup so far. It is by far the most accurate handgun I have ever owned. I'm not a traditionalist so I like the external extractor for reliability. A lot of people are still pissed at S&W cause they kissed Klinton's ???. That was when they were British owned. They are American owned again and I have no problem purchasing their products. Especially a quality gun like the 1911.

The Winchester White Box at Wally World can't be beat for range work. For a defensive load check out Cor-Bon's 165gr PowR'Ball. It is a hollow point bullet with a polymer ball inserted into the cavity. Essentially it appears and loads like a FMJ bullet. My gun also likes the Remington 185gr +P Golden Saber, they have grouped the best for me. I haven't tried the Federal HydraShock or Speer Gold Dots yet.

I speak under correction. :) My local gun shop has them now at $679 At that price, I'm going to be there tomorrow when they open to put my money down. :D

The 1911 forums seem to have many great reviews of this gun. Looks like S&W has done a great job on this (gasp!) autoloader!

So today I bought one. I put the money down ($679.00) :D I am very happy, having shot it yesterday at the S&W store in Springfield. Very nice, very accurate gun.

I will actually pick it up once my pistol permit comes in......

SigLaw,

I see you're in Los Angeles... so there's probably a Turners Outdoors somewhere close by.

www.turners.com

they carry remanufactured ammo by Cal-Ammo in 45, it's 34.99 for a box of 250.

I use it in .40S&W and it's good stuff. Not the best, but at that price its hard to beat.

They use winchester cases I think... not sure.

Cheap .45 Ammo

I've put more than 1000 rounds of Wolfe 230 grain FMJ ammo through my Kimber CDP Pro (used it for break-in, too), without any problems whatsoever.

Some people assert that the steel casings on the Wolfe will break your extractor, though I have never, ever, heard of an instance of that actually happening. More to the point, WWII GI ammo was also steel cased. I figure if it were good enough for "the greatest generation," then it's good enough for me.

Although they are not the absolute low-ball price, I've found that when combining price and shipping, www.ammodirect.com with Wolf at 500 rounds for $66.00 plus shipping is the best for me. (That may be due to my location; if you're closer to another web seller, you may do better there). I've also found their own loads (sold under the "Kinesmatic") name to be well worth the money. The 230 grain HPs didn't feed too well in my aftermarket magazines, but the 185 grain HPs (look like Remington Golden Saber bullets to me) feed and shoot very well. At $12.50 per box of 50 that's about the cheapest carry ammo I've found, and low priced enough to do some real practice with it. (NOTE: the 185 grain HPs are not listed on the website. You need to phone them and request them.)

Hope this helps. Have a great New Year. Good shooting to you!

Turner's is my store of choice, I bought the gun there. I never noticed the ammo you mentioned. I will pay closer attention next time.

Lynn

Thanks for the ideas. I have been searching the internet sellers and I have found some I will try. Thanks again.
