New to this forum and guns in general. I bought a Colt 6920 , but due to work I have not been able to hit the range with it yet. Also this is my first rifle and I admit I know very little about them. Can you recommend a good book, video etc on maintenance and features?

AR15dotcom can be a bit overwhelming at first.

I say just follow the owner's manual, take it down, pull the bolt and firing pin, clean it, reassemble, repeat, then lube it up pretty well. Practice with an empty mag, lock the bolt back, release the bolt, set the safety, dry fire it, etc....just get a real feel for the controls before you go live. You will realize they are pretty darn simple.

I can't recommend any particular book or video, but I'll bet if you punch in the right stuff on youtube you will get a ton of hits.

Hit the range and shoot it. Be safe! Know and 100% obey the gun safety rules.

Lot of good information on m4carbine.net. They get a little cranky with new people but the info there is great.

Like others state YouTube is great. Enjoy and great rifle.

You might also cruise by Gun Digest.com and check out some of their on sale digital downloads?

I'm normally too cheap to pay for a digital download, but they had a few on sale, so I took a chance.

Gun Digest Presents Gun Facts: AR-15

Not too bad for the sale price, 'specially for someone new to the platform, but the picture quality is a bit of a disappointment.

BTW - you might consider buying a 1/2" presentation binder (under $3) and some clear plastic sheets (optional) and start making yourself a binder with good AR-15 info you dig up on the 'Net.

I've got a nice little reference binder full of a lot of good, free stuff I've found on the 'Net (schematics, maintenance, disassemble, all with good pix).

I kinda like Patrick Sweeney's AR books, but they get progressively worse (or "less good") - I guess there's only so much you can say 'bout the AR!?

I'll second m4carbine.com. Great knowledge base there, terrific stickies for new guys, and both the mods and the members police it pretty well -- high drama not really tolerated.

As with any forum, run searches before posting questions -- once you have a good knowledge base and find questions arising for which there aren't already a hundred threads, start posting.

Magpul's Art of the Carbine 1-2 are great vids for newbs. Id highly recommend either for the brand new beginner.

This. That is, if you're looking at your new AR as more of a self/home-defense weapon. If you're just planning on shooting off the bench or hunting, I think you'll find those videos interesting but not quite as useful. The Magpul Carbine 1 and 2 videos have a ton of information about reloading, malfunction drills, reflexive fire, etc. Great stuff if you plan on using the AR for defensive/combat purposes.

That little comic book is super useful and illustrated by Wil Eisner. Plain language, easy to understand.

I came in here to add to the conversation, and ended up learning some things I didn't know. Thanks TUJ, couple a lube points I've never considered, so I copied those pics. And I learned pink is really ugly on a rifle.

The library sticky at top of this forum has dozens of links for AR-related info

Retired from Army in '91 and totally forgot about these comic book instructions. Wow ... what a blast from the past!

Lots of info at TheHighRoad.org. :neener:

Welcome, good folks here and they can help with whatever you need with your new baby.
